wifes sick.. i cant leave the house..my new project savage was a fraction to the left at 25 yrds..now the goal at that range was to dot an i literally..
well after 7 shots with ample cooling in between shots i have my goal..
it dots an i.. it puts the next rnd in that hole.. of course this using sandbags..so its where i want..any of the 7 shots would have fit moa.. but its as perfect as i can make it..
now my question .. what is zero projected to be ...
the rnd is 165 grn fusion in 30 06..the gun savage 110 w 22 inch barrel..
so if yall can help ,,i can t get to the range..
its a hunting gun but really more accurate than most hunting guns i suspect..but i need to know what my projected zero again out there is... taking al this info into consideration... any help is appreciated ..always ..
fusion has lots of info but not zeroing at 25 yrds. thanks much slim
ps its muzzle velocity is 2790 ..2590 at the hundred ..2400 at 200 an 2220 at300yds

Well, I don't know that you can predict until you try. For one thing it would depend on the height of the scope rings above the bore.

Prediction? You should be somewhere between dead-on at 100 yards, up to perhaps 2 or 3 inches high. This assumes a perfect zero at 25.

Assuming you have a scope mounted at "average" height -- not excessively high or extremely low -- you should be high a bit at 100 yards, probably 2 to 3". This would put you dead-on at a bit beyond 200 yards, call it 225 or so.

But shooting at those ranges is the only way to be sure.

Slim,

Given the velocity numbers you provided, your bullet has a BC of around .430. If your scope is 1.5" above line of sight you should be zero at 25, 3" high at 100 yards, zero again around 250 and 3.5" low at 290 yards.

I remember reading a book by Jack O'Connor, written in the early 60's, that said with any spitzer style bullet exiting the muzzle between 2,800fps and 3,200fps, to zero the gun at 25 and it should be about 3" high at 100. He also said the PBR should be somewhere between 275 and 325, which was about as far as he reckoned anybody ought to be shooting, in the first place!

I guess things haven't changed all that much in the last 50 years, huh?

yea jm broom ,,thats exactly what i needed as i do practice at 400 when i ever get the chance again..im just so pleased with this second 110
that i bought simply because it was to good a gun to let pass at $377 with scope.. sooner or later ,,i ll put me a busnell 4-12 on it... but for now this simmons tells true..i needed that as a guide for hold over ,,in this case anything over 250.. thanks again brother..slim
ps if it weren t for this savage 110 id be embarrassed anytime i went to the gun range.. ive watched several ofum getting togather to work up a black powder gun or something .. like as not ,,i ll start hearing same hole buy the spotter ..
before there thru.. they know thier stuff. slim

took one shot into a wind that i guessed 8 mph. .. weather man says its 10 gusting to 15..this at 250 yrds shooting 10 % dn angle..
rnd hit 4 inches low ,,i inch to left of mark...
i did it in the wind to learn what affect shooting dead into the wind would have on the 165 grn fusion rnd....i ll have to wait for dead calm to know how much the wind affected the shot.. but i suspect im so close to where i need be that i doubt i ll try much fine tuning of this simmons.
at 25 i can knock the 0 outa of a 9 as shes set now.. we ll see though..
could be its just set a little low for 250.... if thats the case i won t adjust .. any advice appreciated..
could be its zeroed closer to 200 .. thats fine ,,long as i know it. thanks slim

That's not a bad zero at all. I would guess you are very close to zeroed at 200, and probably just about exactly 2" high at 100.

The computer tables say that if you are exactly -4 inches at 250 yards firing a 10 degree downslope, and you have a sight line 1.2" above the bore (low scope), you are zeroed at 192 yards, and an 8 mph wind coming at you from 9 degrees (12:18 O'clock by the hour hand alone), just right of dead-on, would give you a 1" push left at that range.

None of the above will be exactly accurate because it assumes the published MV is correct for a 24" barrel and reduces to 2736 fps in your 22" barrel, neither of which will likely be exact. Also, that the bullet's ballistic coefficient is constant over the range figured, which it won't be, quite.

200 -225 should be your zero. If you can sight in at 40yd that might work better for you

i know what you talkin.. the fella that kinda has taught me more over a counter than anyone,,mike almond.. he sights all his centerfires hunting guns in a 50 .. its his opinion thats best..he use to tell me that it varies with rifles but that would have me on at as close to 200 as any method hes found.. im a little resticted now as to shooting..
ive put that savage up 1/4 to the right an two high at the hundred..
its silly to buy another scope right now..
ive pulled out my best savage 110 now an both guns will just make the
hole bigger ,off sandbags but this ones well broke in an just as accurate as i can imagine a rifle can be..ive run into the same problem with it
as before .. ammo to high to sling at paper ..any thing wrong with any shot an its wind or me ..the gun is gonna hit its mark..so its really a waste of money to do anything but practice form an rifle hold on an unloaded gun,,pulling a trigger thats on safety..
now all ofum [rifles]set an im holding a hunting license.. medical reasons keep me home enjoying my wifes company while i can..its about priorities an i know whats coming.. imo enjoy her now.. you guys would laugh if you saw how i make these 25 yrd shots..im not telling..:)slim
ps i broke over an shot a mark on a target 70 yrds awy to night .. had the mag lite on it..it was 2 high at 70 so im guessing 2 1/2 at a 100 .. strait up alighnment an every thing perfect..i fear i brag..
so i ll shut up an jus be happy i got it...yall have a good night
