View Full Version : Savage 99
Stopped into a small gun shop while working my way home from the north country and on the rack ( consignment ) was a vintage Savage Model 99, schnabel forearm, 250-3000 cal. This rifle is in very nice condition and well cared for. Anyway - it was consigned at $795. It had an old Weaver 7x on top, I believe a V7 or ?7. Is this a ball park value ( or too much ) for an older Model 99 ? I'm just wondering as I have no interest in buying this rifle.

Go over to the Savage shooters forum on the 24 hour campfire. It may be worth it, but it sounds a bit high for a Savage 99 in that caliber.
Maybe it's a rare model.
The 250 savage is the most sought after caliber. Depending on what 99 model it is (A,C,E ,G etc.) and condition. If it has the brass cartridge indicator and old style safety it is priced in the ballpark. By the way where was the shop?

I stand corrected! THought the 358 Wins were the spendiest, but not so.
I posted this info over on the "24 hr campfire" and they didn't seem real interested. The shop where the rifle is :

The price on savage 99s seems to be climbing, I stumbled upon one in a gun shop with four switch barrels in a presentation case, cost $2,100 it was a true beauty and one of the barrels was .410, glad i did not have the money or i would have spent it!
Vic, that's great small shop that I always stop by if I'm in the area. I know somebody around there has a good collection of guns since there always seems some interesting consignment guns.
BenT.............yes it is a great little place. I stop through there every so often ( heading north or returning ) to see what's been traded in or on consignment. "Trade-ins" are pretty regular there.

You can all be happy for not living in Norway if you think 795,- is expencive.
Here a Savage 99 in 308 win. costs between 1600 and 2100 dollars.
I am not taking in to account the value of the dollar at any given time.
With a good scope and a good gun strap the price will be something like
3400-4200 $.

Depends on model and condition. Not long ago a pristine EG went for $1400. however, a lot of what you see has holes drilled and swivels installed when/where they aren't supposed to be. The 358 is desirable but by that time Savage quality had fallen on its face. In standard calibers, the 250 is king for postwar models.
