COMMENTS: Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago and our nation was the most prosperous in the world, had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What the heck changed?

P.S. I hesitated to put this in the Humor section as it is more inclined to bring tears rather than laughter.

100 years ago;

Our children were dying of scarlet feaver, german measles, polio, diptheria, shall I continue? Don't forget the annual Influenza epidemic.

The major mode of personal transportation was the horse.

Most people had a milk cow, chickens, and pigs in the back yard.

Running water? Pump the handle, the water will run into the bucket eventually.

Indoor Plumbing? A pump at the kitchen sink.

In 1908 over 15,000 people were killed in train wrecks in the USA.

Toilet paper? Last year's Sears catalog in the outhouse.

Electricity? What? Are we talking science fiction here?

I will take today with its taxes, thank you.

308shtr,
All the "advances" you name are part of what may make this country so crowded, polluted and otherwise miserable that no one will want to live here anyway. I'm not always in favor of "progress".

Hey Grumpy,

If what you says is true about the advances bringing about the crowded conditions, then China and India would be almost unpopulated. No, I'll take the advances in technology and science.

But................

Do we have to take all the people that come with it??? :D

Each country has had the opportunity to use its resources to its own advantage. We have taken the greatest advantage of that opportunity and we do NOT have to share our benefits with other countries. We can set our own immigration policies as we wish. I just wish we would.

I like the advances also, but let us not forget that in the last 100 years we fought against what is happening in our country in wars. We must have lost them all. We now elect communists and socialists instead of shooting them.

dclark1,
You are quite right. I guess I was just feeling, well, GRUMPY!

I was just thinking about how all the open, wonderful places I used to know as a kid are now subdivisions, there's no place to shoot except shooting ranges, and it takes ten minutes to go a mile. I remember when, if a mile took ten minutes, it was because you were loafing along on your bicycle.

Oh Well - Still grumpy.

dclark1, Are your ancestors Native American? If not then where did they come from? and why?
I am willing to bet the Native Americans have wished for a long time they had instituted stricter policies of who they let in.I am half Cherokee and half Scottish, all American!
During the American revolution, we assissted the American colonies, and were told by the Brits leave now or be executed.
Many people are still looking for a better life.
I do not begrudge someone coming over here, I do vehemantly begrudge people coming over, not being able to speak the language, and making a straight dash to the welfare, food stamp, and other assisstance lines!
Then trying to live their lives like they did wherever they came from. Instead of BECOMING an AMERICAN and doing their part.

Halfbreed,

"Most people had a milk cow, chickens, and pigs in the back yard." Quite frankly, I kinda like our cows and pigs (backyard or elsewhere), but chickens are the dumbest animal God ever created, so I agree KFC represents progress.

Folks,

I did a dummy!

As a moderator, I realize one of our challenges is to direct social commentary to the subjects of firearms, hunting and related subjects. I should have known that the subject of taxes, even as an subject of humor, would stray from our guidelines.

I sincerely hope the responders will not take offense as their additions were well done, well intended and not inflamatory. But please help with my 'dummy' and see if you can think of something funny about taxes....now there's a challenge for you.

Dan - easy fix. We just need a 'Sad but True' forum.
