I think im becomming a levergun nut!
Ive got a few long guns, right now ive got:
AR-15
Remington 870 12g
Mossberg 500 12g
for levers I have
Marlin 1895G (45-70 love it)
Puma M92 trapper version (.44mag finaly got sights figgured out I think)
Ithica MI-29 i think its called its an only .22 single shot lever
Im living out in west texas, ive always hunted with leverguns never realy had a need for bolt guns. But now that im out here i think i need to get one. I want to get a good bolt gun something in one of the various good all around calibers that everybody always fights about. However everytime I say im gonna save up and get that bolt gun and good scope I wind up buying something else. Everytime I go to the gunstore I check out leverguns. I think im gonna have to add a .30-30 to the collection as well as a .357 magnum. Ill probably get both in a Marlin rifle. Once I get back to Florida im going to pick up my Grandfathers Marlin 336C in .35 Remington. I can't wate to get that! I killed my first deer with that gun. Any way I got a fealing im gonna buy a good all around bolt gun then im gonna be one of those guys in 30 years ive got one AR a couple of shotguns a good bolt gun and a bizillion lever guns. How many of you are lever gun nutz??

Well, as far as a good/great all 'round bolt gun, you can't beat a 30-06, just find one in a config you like. There is an article in this site about the '06 and when you can easily shoot anything from .30 round ball to 220+ bullets at anything from rabbit to elk, well, you're doin' somethin'!
I had an 1895, sold it because I could not find a use for it not filled by my .35 Rem in PA. Then (the idiot I am) sold the .35 Rem cause I didn't think I'd get to hunt it here in NC. Good effin' thing I kept my .32 WS!!! That and a Westernfield 30/30 are what I have for levers, not thrilled with the WF, too much like a Marlin, don't like pistol grip levers.
A few others are a Colt HBAR, Win M100, waiting for the firing pin to come back from Winchester, and a Mossy bolt 20 guage. And so far, aside from the AR, I like my '94 .32 WS best!

I have a number of lever action guns. I attribute it to watching a bunch of John Wayne movies when I was a kid. :D
I've got a Win. 94 30-30 Illinois Sesquicentennial edition, a Win. 94 45 Colt w/loop handle, a Win. 94 44 Mag & I used to have a Savage Mod. 99 in 300 Savage. I kinda' wish I had not traded that one away.

If you want a allround cartridge and love lever guns, go for a Savage 99 in 308 win. or any
caliber you can bild on a 308 up to 358 win.,no problem.
They will put down anything from the size of a moose and down to rabbits.
Got a 99 in 358 win. myself, and absolutely love this gun.

the savage 99 is considerd by many to be the greatest rifle of all time. My grandfather had one in .308. If you can find one in good condition buy it!

I like the .308 round myself, for an all purpose round. I would lean toward the Remington 700 but I have a friend with a Howa in .308 that can drive tacks. Not so sure the brand of rifle is as important as how well you shoot what you have.
The 30-06 is very flexible in factory rounds available.
I shoot a Savage in 22-250 at prairie dogs out to about a half a mile.
Pick a quality gun and practice with it!
I have three Levers (.22, 454 Casull, 30-30) but for long range, my bolt is the only thing I have with a scope.
Good luck!

I am kinda fond of the lever guns myself. I killed my first deer with my grandfathers Win 92 32-20. My first deer rifle was a Win 94 in 30-30 I bought off one of my dads hired hands for $50. I have probably owned about 30 lever guns during my life. With the exception of two Win 92 32-20s I have inherited, I have six Marlin Lever guns and another on order at my cousins shop. I also have a large number of bolt action rifles but by far the lever guns get the most use. I guess one thing I like about the lever guns is I can have several pistol rifle combos that shoot he same ammo. Rabbits to big bears, my lever guns will do it all.

I hunt West Texas, and I use lever actions. Haven't used a bolt gun since the mid-1970's. Why mess with something so crude and slow? Browning list calibers from .22-250 to .325 WSM, all in a BLR. Personally, I have never found the need to attempt a game shot beyond 300 yards (varmints, yes). My tang sighted Browning 1895 will group inside 2.5 inches at two hundred yards, and takes game past that. My BLR's reach well beyond. I also take game in West Texas with a bow and a revolver. Actual game killing ranges are dictated more by hunting technique than simply by terrain.

I also like lever guns but only currently have one a Marlin 1894S in .41 Mag. Have owned several other over the years. A 1941 dated Win 94 in .30WCF, Marlin 1895 in 45-70 and a Browning 1895 in 30-06. For a bolt gun I'm going to pick up a Marlin XL-7/XS-7 for my son for Christmas when I come on leave next month. Seems Bass Pro has them for $279.99 and the have a very good reputation for accuracy.

My first levergun was a marlin 336. At the time I worked in a shop where it was very hard to hang on to guns. Someone was always wanting to trade or buy what I had. So, traded the marlin in a deal for a semi-auto shotgun and bought a browning 7mm rem mag bolt for an elk hunt in CO. Never made it on the elk hunt and after four years of hunting close range with the 7mm, I sold it. I just got my 94 30-30 (1974) in the mail yesterday. The bore and action check out (the outside is not pretty) and my peep sight is in the mail. Can't wait to get this thing in the woods (after some shootin of course). So, I've gone full circle and intend to add more levers to the collection in the future. Isn't it interesting that we can all tell our life stories by the guns we have, the ones we've sold and the ones we've traded.

Since you love levers and are most comfortable with them, I would strongly suggest taking a good look at the new Marlin 308 MX. It gives you the long range accuracy and killing power you are looking for without a doubt, and in a very familiar gun. What could be better than that?
