I have a sporterized mark 4 that I would like to mount an open partrige sight to the REAR of the receiver. Problem is that they milled off the block the rear sight was attached to and installed a barrel mount flip up marble. I figure that means I'm looking for a side mount system. I've been thru the Brownells catalog and can't find any that specifies it will mount to the side of THIS rifle receiver. Does anybody have any info on something that might work? Thanks.Bill

Redfield made one 30 years ago, but you still need the left-side lug to mount it. It looks like a Williams FP sight for a Marlin 336 will fit on the flat ahead of the safety. The sight base is about 1/10" taller than the flat, but beveling the inside bottom edge might get you down enough. The Williams slide is arched for the Marlin receiver and the Mk. 4 receiver is wider.
I'd be inclined to call Williams and ask them what they think. They might mix&match a Marlin base and a wider slide.
I hope that Marble's is in a cut dovetail or screwed on. The most blown up gun I ever saw was a No. 4 with an open sight welded to the barrel flat just ahead of the receiver. The flat disappeared along with the extractor lug on the bolt head. The rest of the bolt held, but the action was bent, so that with the bolt stuck halfway back, the firing pin hole lined up with the top of the bore. The bottom half of the case was still in the chamber.

PEPE...Double oops.......Yeh, no. 4, I think mark 1, trigger is hindged on trigger houseing. I read somewhere the mark two trigger is hindged on the receiver. Any other ways to distinguish?

The No. 4 Mk. II has the trigger hinged on a block on the front of the butt socket, while the Mk.I and all earlier rifles like the No. 1 Mk. III had the trigger hinged on the trigger guard/floor plate. The old setup wouldn't hold a constant trigger pull if the stock shrunk or swelled. Converted Mk. Is are marked No. 4 MK. I/2 (eye slash two) and should have a FTR stamp (Factory Through Repair) on them. There were some post-war mods tried on the forend wood, but they weren't adopted.

JACK...it appears you know your stuff when it comes to smle's so let me take this thread in a new direction. What can you tell us about smle's that are chambered in .308? I read that some of them may not be safe to shoot. Also, where would a guy start to look if he wanted to buy one?

Now you've got me. IIRC, the No. 4 MK Is are OK, but some Ishapore (Indian) No. 1 Mk. IIIs were converted too, and I'd stay clear of them. Check here and see what you can find. http://www.303British.com

I've got a No.1 MkIII Ishapore .308 but havn't done anything w/it yet. Probably wont for a while. It's 22 below 0 as I type and it never got above -4 at 1pm today. Guess I'm gettin soft. Hey Jack, If I put one of these new composition stocks on my No.1 Mk III (Aussie), will it help straighten out the vareing trigger pull? That stuff doesn't warp or shrink. Pepe Ray

I think it would work. How much of a problem is it now?
It hit 30°F below last Saturday night here. It was so cold that Paul Martin put his hands in his own pockets.

PEPE RAY....Have found two synthetic stocks so far.. One is ram-line (no cheek piece), http://www.outers.com
The other has a raised cheek piece for scope http://www.cheaperthandirt.com
I was looking for a nice wood w/cheek piece (finished or un-finished) for my No. 4 mk1 but cannot find. Should you see one, please let me know. FYI..."GUN TESTS" magazine, Sept. 2001 tested the ishapore 2A in 7.62 NATO and recommended it as a best buy in surplus bolt rifles. Said it was well built and reliable. There gun was manufactured in 1965. Keep your electric socks plugged in....dropped down to 54 F here last night, got up and closed the window!..... Bill (Phx, Arizona)

Gee that's TOO BAD. Bet it got stuffy, didn't it? Seems to me Ive seen a wooden stock w/cheak piece, advertised in the past few months. I'll look ya up when I find it.
Jack, the trigger as it stands is ok for plinkin or huntin, but if I use it in a turkey shoot it could cost me a bird. Pepe Ray
