My 12ga. remington 870 magnum seems to not want to feed properly when i use 2 3/4 shells, anyone else have this experience, could it be the 2 3/4 shells causing the problem?
I used an 870 on the police department and I have one for deer hunting and have never had a problem of any kind. However, I remember range officer ALWAYS told us to never baby a shotgun. Ram the shell when loading and forcibly jack a round into the magazine. I'm always tough and hard on my shotgun and she loads quick everytime. They're built Remington TOUGH!
When all else fails, call Remington. They can locate a factory rep gunsmith nearby your location.

Not babying the gun might prove to be the key, i did notice while practicing the local custom of shooting out the old year/shooting in the new year that when i rammed the slide it seemed to work better. I think that i may have been trying to work the pump quickly i may not have been getting full travel. I will have to do some more experimentation

When my 870 WM was new it sometimes had a habit of "hanging up" on the upstroke. Actually could have just been me short stroking it. Now after a couple of thousand rounds it is slick and haven't had the problem again. I think it just needed breaking in. How many rounds have been through your's? Maybe you just need to shoot it more :-).

Had the same problem with my 870 mag right out of the box, sent it back to Remy came back the same way, traded it off for a BPS. My older ones are slick as slick can be,I think it's just not machined as well as the older ones.

My 870 doesn't jam on the upstroke but on the down and is reluctant to open the action. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does it is frustrating because, well I am a bad shot and usually need a second chance, sometimes I don't get it. I usually have to rest the butt on my knee and pull the slide back really hard. I haven't really thought much about it because it doesn't happen that often. The gun is about a year and a half old and probably has had 500-750 rounds through it.

JB,
I've got an 870 3" mag. Have never had a problem with 2 3/4" shells jaming. Could you post a pic of the jam? Maybe if we could see it we could be more help.

Its not as much of a Jam as it is a hang when i try to close it up. I think i may have been short stroking it. Haven't had a chance to get it out and blast clay birds this year yet

I have one tip for making your 870 quit jamming. Don't use Fiochi shells. Everytime that I have used Fiochis they jam. I'm 15 now and when I was 12 I was on a pheasant hunt on the california central coast and the shells were jamming. I was lucky that I could hit the birds with one shot because that's all I was getting.

Wow, its been awhile since I have seen this thread, I guess I should have posted that I got my problem straightend out with the help of fellow member simmonsguns. It turned out to be the dog that raises the shell carrier was worn a little and it wasn't fully lifting the shell into place and binding, replaced the carrier unit and its good as new
