I purchased a Winchester Super Shadow in 300 WSM back in Sept and have had a tough time shooting a group under 3 inches with it. My friends with more shooting experience than me say that the trigger feels heavy to them. I would like to reduce the trigger pull weight. Am I better off to purchase an after market trigger like a Timney, or have a gunsmith adjust the stock trigger. Since the Super Shadow is a Model 70, I believe I have both options. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi - the model 70 has one of the most user-friend triggers available!

The weight of pull is simple to adjust. You need two thin, flat, quarter-inch wrenches. Loosen the lock nuts on the rod on the back side of the trigger. This controls the tension on the trigger return spring.

Back off till you get to about 3 lbs. If you don't have a trigger scale, get creative and find something in that weight range, like a plastic soda bottle with about 6 cups of water in it (1 pint of water weighs right at 1 lb). Hang the water bottle from a string, then hang the string on the trigger. Set it so that it will just barely hold the weight, but when you just barely touch it with your finger, it snaps. Naturally you'll do this with the action out of the stock, the gun unloaded, and pointing straight up!

Don't worry about creep (sear engagement) or overtravel right now. Just get the pull weight down reasonable and see how much that helps.

Be sure to lock the nuts back together, and I'd use some threadlocker on them also.
