Has anyone had any problems with the new Winchester Mod 86 and the Browning 71 misfireing? It seems like the firing pin doesn't hit the primer hard enough to fire it. I have had this problem with one 86 and Browning 71. I put a new hammer spring in the 71 and it was the same. Then I put a spacer in with the spring and it fires now but something is not right to have to do this. I have an 86 extra LW that hasn't missfired yet but it leaves a very shallow firing pin intendtion like the others.
Any one have any cures or thougnts on this I would be pleased to hear them.
Thanks
Rich

That is odd, at first I was going to ask you if you handload or buy cheap ammo that could be the problem. But then I noticed the shallow firing pin indentation comment...I'm not sure but maybe some new springs would help, I really dont know what would cause that.

Bowyer: Check the last couple of issues of Handloader and Rifle magazines. Dave Scovill had an article detailing a fix for this. It involves shortening one arm of the hammer strut about .035 to .040 inches.
Make sure you understand exactly what he's talking about before you attempt it and you'd best plan ahead for how you intend to recompress the hammer spring for reassembly. If in doubt take the article and the rifle to a gunsmith.
As a hint I made a tool from a sleeve of the right size that I could mount in my drill press and use the drill press feed to compress the spring along the strut which was held in a vise. It requires a notch in the sleeve at the end that contacts the spring that will allow you to slide the retaining pin back in place.
I hadn't had any misfires with mine but did the fix as a just in case.

I removed the entire bottom arm and eliminated the rebounding hammer. I consider it unnecessary. That also eliminated the problem you were having.

dclark,
I too considered removing the rebounding hammer system as I also consider it unnecessary but didn't know what effect that would have on the safety.
I also consider the safety as unnecessary. Guess I need to study it some more.
Wouldn't it have been nice if Winchester had reproudced these 86's exactly like the old ones, I have never had a misfire or problem like this on my original 86.
Thanks for your comments.
