Keith Ok but someone told me that if I used a lighter load I might not get good penetration

You'll get enough penetration with the 40 V-max. Coyote is not a BIG animal. In fact the 40 V-max will give you adequate penetration so that it will not exit and tear a big chunk on the other side.

What about using a 40gr silver tip or just a 40gr JHP(jaketed hollow point)?

How many grains of powder should I put in if I am shooting a 40gr jacketed hollow point. The gun is a rem model700 with a 1:10 twist.
According to my charts, a factory Remington 700 barrel has a 1:12 twist rate. Any thing over probably 55 grains isn't going to stabilize too well.
I'm using 52 gr Speer HPBT's with 27.0 gr of Varget and a BR4 primer in W-W cases in my Ruger M77VT and getting around 3250 fps, chronographed. These are moly'd bullets.

Are you referring to the Combined Technology 40 grainers loaded by Winchester? Those are basically the same as the 40 gr. Balistic Tips. Those have a tendency to exit a little more than the V-Max due to their solid base construction. I have no experience with the 40 gr hollowpoints. Are those loaded by Winchester as well? I am not sure if you are saving your coyote pelts or not but any 40 grainers loaded fast will knock them down. Good hunting.

I'm using the 50gr V-Max with Varget. They chrono about 3220 in my Model 700. I've used faster loads, but I've settled on Varget as my "medium burning rate" powder, so that's what I've got for now.
Personally, I like something with more zip for faraway coyotes. 6mm Rem with 65gr Z-Max bullets! Much better at the 300+ yd shoots you can get at my step-father-in-law's ranch.
After about 200 yds the coyotes seem to spin and run more often with the 223.

I'm going to try some 55gr. Ballistic Tips in my 6mm Rem, at about 4,000fps or so.
Don't think the coyotes will survive that!

Yes the hollow points are loaded by winchester.
Thanks for your comments if anyone has any thing else to say I am still open to suggestions.
