I ran across this gunsmith who can lengthen the marlin action. Here is and exerpt from his website:

Marlin 336-based (long) actions:
lengthened to accept 2.68" cartridges, add $125;
lengthened to accept 2.73" cartridges, add $250.

He also lengthens the throat (for an additional fee). What effect does this have on loading heavier bullets?

Would you give us the site info?
It will make it easier to use the crimp grove in some cases because you'll be able to seat the bullets out futher. It would also allow for a little more powder but not much. His prices seem alittle high though.

Sounds like Mic McPherson. Dave Clay does it for less if you can find him. I had my gunsmith do my 1895 (2.7") by giving him the Mic McPherson article in Precision Shooting where the process is explained. My 'smith did it for $50.

Thank-you gentlemen.
Jackfish, do you think your smith would do alittle work on mine? I,d like to get it feeding a bit longer so I could feed it heavier longer bullets without having to seat so deep. There isn't anyone close to me that can do the work. In fact most around here havn,t heard of the 444.
