What is the going price of a Browning BLR in .284 in good condition. I understand now that Browning reintroduced the .358 the .284 is the tuffest to get. Any input would be appreciated............

Hi Tim50,

I shoot a .284 and have since it's introduction in the '60's. Mine are both Bolt Rifle's, one being custom made on a Mauser action, the other on a Sako action. The WInchester model 88 for which it was chambered had a bad reputation for accuracy - - so I opted for the bolt action.

The .284 is a tremendousley underated cartridge, especially with handloading. It is very accurate and even I can get 5 round one inch groups at 100 yards.

Anyway to answer your question. I recently saw a BLR in .284 at a gun show and they had $639.00 on the price tag. In examining the rifle I do have to say that it would have rated at an NRA 'very good condition' to maybe 'excellent condition'. I thought long and hard about buying it but had justed invested in a new Marlin 444p 'Outfitter' in the Guide Gun configuration so decided if I still wanted to sleep inside my home I had better pass on the BLR.

One of the guys at the range picked up a BLR .284 with a Burris scope, (I forget the power of it or if it was a variable), a set of dies, 200 cases and a soft case for $350.00 last summer!!!!!!! This rifle also was in NRA 'very good condition'.

I shot next to him a couple of times and can testify that the BLR was very accurate - - much more than what the reputation of the Winchester 88 is supposed to have.

I wish you success in locating a BLR .284 and if you find two and the price is under $500.00 let me know I will buy the second one :o)

Just for the record I just sold a Browning BLR-81 in 284Win that was 99% for $900.00,plus shipping with a Tasco scope 3x9x40(probably a $100.00 scope). So while the book says one thing you may see prices higher in most areas.Just a thought and while they can certainly be found cheaper. I haven't seen any of them recently.

The values quoted in the pricing guides are ballpark for any given situation. Supposedly the values are national retail averages. For a lot of guns I find their valuation hard to swallow, for example the BigBore lever actions are listed at $355 in 100% condition plus 25% for 356 and 375 Win. A NIB 356 AE might go for at much as $600 online. Now someone may be actually buying them for the book price...somewhere. Most of us on this forum are probably most familiar with online sales for hard to find models. Prices online can be outright theft! To get the averages down there have to be others buying/selling for much less though. So take it with a grain of salt.
