Has anyone had any experience with Millett scopes? I have been looking for a scope for my Winchester model 94AE Trapper and Millett makes a 1.5-4x32 variable scope that is a compact 8.6" long. Midway has it for $90.05 right now.

Magee:

When first introduced a year or so ago, they got excellent reviews for their quality and value.

I purchased one of their illuminated reticle scopes for a .308 Win. and on the third shot the reticle flipped 45 deg. I sent it back and replaced it Busnell 3200.

Every Mfr. turns out a lemon once in while. I just didn't give 'em a second chance.

Just my experience

Mike,
Thanks for the info. I have posted this question on three different forums and have got very little response on the subject. With the lack of responses I am concerned about buying something that is not very well proven. I would feel more confident buying from a manufacturer that is more widely accepted.

Gents,

I am one of those Marlin Talk orphans, hope you don't mind a few of us joining the ranks of lever action enthusiasts here on the "Shooter's Forum".

And I thank whomever maintains this board.

I, have had no experience with Millett scopes but have heard nothing but bad about them, yours is the first negative I have heard. Sorry it happened.

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200, a good scope but favor Leupold. I have used Leupold for 30 years and have never had a problem. Crisp, clear and their service department is incredible to deal with.

Just my opinion.

Hey Sidespin,

My daddy was from Tennessee. Does that make me part 'bootleggin redneck ridgerunner'? :D

cturpin,

I have a compact 4x Millett scope on a Marlin 30-30. I've fired about 200 rounds through the rifle since mounting the scope and have had no problems. The scope seems to be a good value. The rifle has only been to the range so it has not been subjected to much abuse.

Could you tell me the over all length of the scope and the length of the tube where the scope rings mount? I'm currious to see if it would fit my gun. Thanks for your help.

Millett Buck Silver Compact 4X32-Heavy Plex

Overall length: 8.63

Rear bell: 2.56

Front bell: 2.32

Knob section: 1.25

Space between rear bell and knob section: 1.25

Space between front bell and knob section: 1.25

I used a Weaver mount. I had to file an extra cross slot to fit this scope on the mount.

Hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need any other dimensions.

Thanks for the information. I am looking for a compact scope for my Trapper which is a short lever gun. I think a short scope would look more in proportion with the gun. The problem is that with the Winchester you are more limited when mounting a scope than compared to the Marlin. Mounting a scope on the Trapper I need at least 4 3/8 " between the bells of the scope in order to mount it and that does not allow me any fore and aft movement to allow for eye relief adjustment. I think a lot of people are going with the guide type mount on these guns. According to your measurements the Millet Compact it is just that. Too compact for my gun with the limitations I have to work with. I think I am going to have to go with a scope that is at least 10 inches in length to allow for some fore and aft movement for me. Thanks for your help.

cturpin,

If you are interested, I can make a custom scope mount for you to facilitate mounting any scope you wish. Let me know via email and post here too. I'll get one or the other.

Cturpin:

I have a Simmons 4x20 Blackpowder scope on my Win. Ranger Compact, which is basically the same as the Trapper.
The scope fits nicely on the Ranger and is small enuf that it doesn't look out of place and does not affect the handling of the rifle as much as some of the larger scopes do, and since there is no objective bell, you can get the eye relief you neeed. I do not know if Simmons still has this scope in their lineup, as I purchased this one last year.

I have a problem with open sights now at my age. Got a new 336C for Christmas and I wanted to keep it with open sights but realized I couldn’t see the target if I saw the sights or couldn’t see the sights if I could see the target, with the bifocals glasses that I have to wear these days. I wanted the rifle for close in 100 yards or less and quick sight acquisition.

I got a Bushnell 1.75 X 4 Trophy. It has something like 73ft@1.75 field of view at 100 yards. This is the first scope that I have that isn’t a Leupold. I love it. You may want to take a look at one.

The local gunshop has been selling them for quite a while. I was looking at them also. Lee, the owner told me he had sold over 150 of the 3x9s and hadn't had any returned as yet.
