Marlin announced a 480 ruger for this gun. So where in Knock down power would you place it, ie. 44mag to 45-70?

I,m getting 1,250 fps out of my 9 1/2" SRH 480 with a 410 gr CPB WFNGC. This should do 1,400 - 1,500 fps from an 18 1/2" bbl. In the 475 Linebaugh format you could gain 100 to 150 fps on that. I think you will be looking at mid range 45-70 load equivilents with a bigger bullet diameter. Since they're chambering the 480/475 in the same 1895 frame, you might as well go with the 450 Marlin or 45/70. I am considering getting an RL for a companion to my SRH, but this is a want more than a need. I already have a 1895M which I dearly love.

Jim-If I owned a .480 or a .475 revolver, either of the new Marlin's would be nice to have for a rifle pistol combination. The 45-70 and .450 Marlin have more power than either of the two new ones altho this gives us poor boy's a chance to own a .475 Linebaugh without forking out 12-2,000 bucks for a premium pistol.
Best of luck on your choice.

Sorry to turn away from your original thought, but has anyone been tempted like I to get an 1895RL and have it rechambered to the 475 GNR (or equivalent - a 45-70 case expanded to take a .475" bullet)? I could live with the 18.5" barrel launching a Hornady .475" 400 grain XTP almost 2000 fps. A 22" barrel would be ideal. Maybe there is an 1895RLR in the works?
Back to the original thought:
A 480 Ruger can probably push a 400 grain bullet in the 1895RL close to 1500 fps. That certainly brings it to the level of mid-range 45-70 loads with the advantage of a little more frontal area. I would expect a significant and dramatic departure from the 44 Mag. Should be a great big game rifle.

I inquired with Wild West as soon as I heard about the 1895RL. They replied that the only customs they had planned were takedown conversions....I figured someone would "JUMP" on this one..

Jim,
Since my 2/6/04 reply, I ran acrossed an old article in "Guns & Ammo", November, 2003, "Marlin 1894 .475 Linebaugh". Forkin Arms converted a 1894 to 475 LineBaugh. The article states that they got 1,550 fps with Buffalo Bore's 400 gr JHP and Hornady's 400 gr XTP from a 16 inch Pac-Nor barrel.
Marlin's RL, with 18 inch barrel should gain 25-50 fps on this. Hard cast bullets, like CPB 410 gr, should do about 50-100 fps faster yet. So in theory, a Marlin RL should shoot 410 gr hard cast bullet at 1,625 to 1,700 fps. Only time and a chronograph will tell for sure.
I guess I'll probably have to get me an RL when they become available. I don't really need it, but need and want don't apply to hunting stuff. Just wish my 480 Ruger SRH would sprout another 1/4 inch of chamber and shed one hole so I could use 475 Linebaugh's in it

"Need" definately has nothing to do with it. I think the 1895RL would be a lot of fun to play with. Especially since I don't already own a .44 Mag/.45 Colt or similar big bore pistol cartridge chambered Levergun. Well what do you know; looks like I found a "need" after all!

My guess is there's gonna' be a RL/CB version with octagon barrel or some such fancy treatment on this one too. Looks like the Marlin folks are having fun chambering their rifles in powerful handgun cartridges - and the 500 S&W can't be too far away. ;)
GOOD LUCK!

I have the Marlin .50cal Alaskan Guide Gun. The only thing I had to change is the lever, it is to small for a normal hand. Wild West Guns 1(800)992-4570 built my GG, they had a larger lever on hand, put it on three days after my call to them.
Ooooo.. I want that big loop.. Thanks Go454.

Cape Buff-
Rumor at this time (depending who on the net you talk to) is that the 1895RL won't be available til late 2004.
Iguess for now it's "good things come to those who wait."

Gowge, I hope you are right about the .480 CB. I would buy the Cowboy but the pistol grip on the RL turns me away from the gun. I have a big thing about straight stocks and even a bigger thing about octagon barrels. I've sold off most of my Marlin levers with pistol grip stock and round barrel and only collect the straight/octagon (Cowboy) guns now.
I don't think anyone makes the .480 with an octagon barrel at this time.
