FYI-

I frequent a number of forums & today - note that Marlin has pulled the plug on their forums. Too bad. It was a good place to discuss Marlin specific (as well as general issues).

I want to let Marshall and the others who make this forum possible know that I really appreciate this GIFT you give to us all.

THANKS!

Yeah, was on the forum when they pulled the plug, too bad. I do believe it was the political bs going on in the Misc area. Don't know for sure but that would be my guess. One of them wait and see things, interesting thing was Gunsmith predicted that was going to happen? He was just about right on the money when it was being done.

Sky C -

I absolutely agree with you: Marshall (et al), many many thanks!

www.gmdr.com

ps. anyone have a chance to talk to Marlin about pulling the plug? Was it really related to the "I give this site 30 days" thread? Or did they pull the plug at the end of business today and they'll get the zillion what happened/why phone calls in the morning?

Swany -

It would be interesting to see if Gunsmith was right for the right reason(s)... or if it was in fact because of the misc area... btw: since I never read the misc forum - what did you see over that that might have been "the problem"?

do shoot straight,
greg

It has been a while since I frequented the Marlin forums and I have no idea what has transpired this time.

In the past, things would get a bit out of hand, the site would "go down" for a while, then return and the whole thing would pretty much start over again.

My guess is that IF Marlin has pulled the plug for good, that things will get VERY hectic here and on Leverguns.com

I guess time will tell,

Scotty

Hey guys, glad to see you here on Beartooth. I"ll have to say I was shocked when Marlin pulled the plug, it may have been a political thing as said before.

It's good to see you here, I plan to include this board on my "favorites" list.

The H&R forum went down at the same time so it must have been something beyond jusy Marlin forums. Too bad, was a great place to talk story.

Greg-

I likewise never viewed the "Misc." forum so don't know what was being said there. Glad to see you posting here though as I had a question I'd sent your direction following up on the case fillers thread. Your post discussing the interior ballistics issue was great.

Could you by chance provide a list of recommended readings? I'd like to learn more as much as possible about the "science" of interior ballistics.

Re: specific comments about convective ignition with 60%ish rnage charges... Would my understanding be correct that use of a filler would change the behavior by modifying the powder burn characteristics inside the case? Preventing the "flash" phenomena and precluding the effect of a "shaped charge" when the convective ignitioin effect took over?

Best regards-

Sky C.

I was shocked to see both forums bang their doors closed. I've been buying a lot of guns from both Marlin and H+R/NEF, and the availability of information on those forums has made those decissions for me. I can't help but think this move will cost them both, a lot of sales. They will be missed by many of us.

A sad day!!! I bought three Marlins directly because of the people on Marlin talk and their love of Marlin levers!!

And the quality and fun of course!!! :D

Ported or unported Guide Guns, .30-30 v.s. .35, 45/70 v.s. .450 v.s. .444, what kind of scope to put on My lever gun ( you have half a chance of being called a moron for considering it) , why won't Marlin make a half a dozen straight stocked 12" barreled .356 Ackley Improved chambered guns so I can buy one?, Marlin dosen't listen to their customers, Marlin's quality control has gone in the crapper, Marlin has their heads up their rear (direct quote) , Marlin , Marlin, Marlin!!! I would say between all the redundant overhashed posts , and all the marlin bashing going on it was probably inevitable they would axe the site after all , the non posting visiters usually out number the posters , And I imagine Marlin feared the sales lost to these invisible browsers to be more of a concern than the want's and wishe's of the body off it's members (?) . It is a shame though , as alot of the members were making friendships and sharing a common love of lever guns and the like. Some P.R. types at Marlin must have done some number crunching and desided it was best to pull the plug . Hey it was fun while it lasted.

Hello to all of you former Marlin talk members! I guess we'll never really know why they pulled the plug on it but my guess is that your all pretty close to the truth with your answers. I also bought 2 Marlin's based on responses from Marlin talk but I guess the third lever will be a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I would also like to thank Marshall for this great place to discuss guns and everything else like gentlemen. CEJ...

This hurts, it was my second favorite site. This is my favorite. I have to add my thanks to Marshall for this forum. He is in a class not seen much these days, he always answers my e-mails even when they don't profit him in any way.

Marshall has my prayers for continued success.

I was on Marlin Talk for over two years and was so blessed by it. And yes, irritated at times, too. But I made friends for a lifetime. So, Coldfingers, jackfish, blessed, M700, Mainer, Coyote Hunter, Mammoth, Bear Paw Jack, CapeBuff, and all the others... I hope we keep in touch.

I had been active, for a number of years on Marlin Talk, I enjoyed it and gained a good education on the Marlin guns. Lately I have been spending more time on H+R/NEF Talk and they both have a lot of good knowledgable guys. Hopefully we rediscover each other on other forums. I just saw TubbyTheTuba over on Handloaders Forum. He says he's ticked and that it's like losing part of your family, without being able to say goodbye. I think that about explains it for me to.

Welcome all from the Marlin Talk and NEF boards! It is indeed a sad day, those forums exchanged lots of good, solid information, and were a beginning place for many friendships.

Thanks too for the kind words regarding this website. However, aside from us hosting it, the credit really goes to our excellent team of moderators, who so generously volunteer their time here! It's their efforts that keep this pretty much a fireproof, flame-free zone! My hat's off to them, and with my deepest gratitude I say thankyou for making ShootersForum possible!

As we are seeing the MT refugees filtering into these boards perhaps there are some features, or forum categories not offered here, that you might like to have duplicated on the Beartooth Forums. Please let us know, and although of course, we can't fulfill everything on the wishlists, those things which are a recurring request, I'll sure see about implementing, as long as it compliments what is already here.

I hope all you from MT can connect with your friends from those forums. It's really rude to pull the plug without notice to those of you who enjoyed the services and the comradship of those forums.

Welcome aboard, and God Bless,

Carwi

It's good to see some of you here! I just joined this site after I found out I couldn't get "Marlin Talk" anymore. If any of you know where the majority of marlin talk users went let us know so when can maybe congregate there. I really like this site and have visited it on occasion but will be spending most of my time here now, it's a relatively good board and well put together! Hope to see all our fellow members here soon!..

It sure is nice to see some of the boys here. I have been a member of this site nearly as long as I had been on Marlin.
Marlin was like a home for me as I am a Marlin collector.
The decision to actually collect Marlins was inspired by their website.
Now I am going to have to sell off my Marlins.
(Stop drooling, just kidding)
I hope the rest of the gang (the non confrontational ones) gets here too.
A hearty thanks, Marshall, for all the work you and the administrators do to keep this site as smooth as it is.

Hello Riflemen: Hello Matlin Talk friends. And, hi to the rest of this sites folks to. I'm looking forward to meeting you. I'm really glad this forum is available for us lever guys! I have not had a chance to check on past posts yet, but I bet there's a bunch of good information to read and I'll get to know some fellows that way. I was a little lost tonight when I couldn't get on the "Marlin Talk" board and before I discovered this forum. Thanks CH. Thanks also to the sponsers and moderators for your support. I haven't posted here in the lever guns section much but do in General and Handguns. Used to visit MT almost daily in the Cowboy and Misc sections. (love my 1894 in 41). I would like to reiterate BestLever's sentiment, all us refugees are very glad to be here. I see a lot of you made it over.

Marshall asked for suggestions on forums, I would suggest the new forums be broken down by bore, not manufacturer. I.e. big bores, cowboy calibers, medium bore, etc. That might be a way of still having it all still under leverguns without adding a bunch of top level fourms.

Hey fellows... It was a shock to be on the MT and go back that afternoon and boom... nothing but the note.

I've been here for awhile after purchasing that 444P for my grandson. Actually, this site has a lot of info about the 444 Marlin.

If Marshall is interested in adding to Leverguns... make it by caliber rather than manufacture... Twenties, Thirties and Fourties? I think you learn just as much from the others.

I was going to announce RD's Postal Match II next week. With Marshall's blessing may be we could do it here, keep the caliber categories but let any lever action rifle shoot.

Thanks to Coyote Hunter for inviting me over here. I see lots of the good folks from MT here already.

I was a member on MT for only a little over a year and that because my wife bought me a 336W for my birthday and I needed to know just about everything. That was my first real rifle. I now own a 444S and love that one almost too much.

MT was a wonderful place for me to learn the basics and learn I did. I also made some friendships there that started out as internet friendships and now we hunt together. I know that there will be others and I welcome those with open arms.

Dave :)

p.s. I hope we can do Ranch Dog's Postal Match from this site. It sure made me a much better shooter last year!

Hello all former Marlin Talk members, good thing we have sites such as this so we can still hang out.I think Marlin management could have had some moderators if some of the posts were not to their liking, but to pull the plug because of a few bad apples is wrong in my opinion.I will miss the info on the MT forums,it was my #1 place to go and kill time.I hope all the old MT members will get the ball back up and rolling here and others sites too. It's really too bad that MT had to go.

I know that Marlin Talk was very popular. That meant it became very high maintenance for Ed and his staff. I'm sure Ed is probably responsible for other IT functions at Marlin and the site was becoming time consuming. Now a corporation can view such popularity in different ways. But for it to be viewed as positive requires management to see or perceive some kind of return. Much of the discussion that placed demands on the service came on the BIG BORE RIFLE and MISCELLANEOUS MARLIN TALK forums. And much of that discussion had little to do with Marlin products. There was also the issue of information that could make management uncomfortable, such as reload data, wild claims or poor practices, and political discussions. That the site could not be moderated due to staffing limitations, discussion wandered dramatically and it required increasing attention probably led to its demise. It was a good thing while it lasted, I guess we will have to move on without it.

I also would like to thank Marshall from Beartooth and RickBin from 24hrcampfire for welcoming all Marlin and H&R talkers. Now Marko, we all know that when loaded to their potential in Marlin lever guns, given equal ... :D

Here is what I found posted on the entry page. Very few of us over there saw this anymore as we had the direct link to the forums bookmarked, but I was snooping around over there and found this. Not sure how many of you have seen this.

The Marlin Firearms Company & H&R 1871/NEF- "Marlin Talk" Corporate Policy

We noted that “Marlin Talk” was cancelled because of “technical and administrative considerations”. As you all know, Marlin pays to have our website - including “Marlin Talk” - on the Internet. It is, therefore, a company sponsored feature. This makes Marlin responsible for what appears on the site. As you know, many statements, questions and recommendations appear on the site that may be factually wrong, provide dangerous information, or contradict Marlin safety instructions. Ideally, “Marlin Talk” entries that we disagree with or are just plain incorrect, should be answered by Marlin at the site in a timely manner. This task simply cannot be done because of lack of personnel - thus it is truly an “administrative” problem. To continue with “Marlin Talk”, leaving these concerns, questions, and issues unanswered, is a situation that we do not consider acceptable. To allow former “Marlin Talk” members the opportunity to retrieve e-mail addresses or download listed posts we are opening “Marlin Talk”, without the ability for users to post, until February 20, 2004. We apologize for any inconvenience that the discontinuance of “Marlin Talk” causes you, but due to a wide variety of issues we have no alternative choice. .

Wow, Looks like I found the right spot! I had joined Marlin Talk just a few months ago and really got hooked. Just bought an 1895 Cowboy and hope to shoot it this weekend for the first time. I must of scanned at least a thousand posts trying to decide which model to get. Based on the posts I read and advice I got from some of the posters, I decided the Cowboy was what I needed. I'm really sad to see MT shut down.

I was really dumbfounded when I saw MT was shutting down. Just starred at the screen for a while. Had heard about this forum and a few others while on MT and gave this one a try. BINGO!

Anyways, I felt like I just lost all my new friends, but luckily found them again.

A BIG Thanks to Marshall, Beartooth and the moderators! And to Coyote Hunter for the note where to find all the Big Bore folks from Marlin Talk. Am settled in for a few weeks in balmy Florida, Leesburg. Condolences to those still mired in the "frozen" North. Saw a bumper sticker...said, "When I retire, I'm moving North and driving SLOW in the left-hand lane!" (Is that latent hostility? or what?) :D
Went shooting at the local Gun Shop range with a rented Kimber .45. The rifle range was shut-down until March. Regards and will jump in on a few topics as time permits. Good ta see y'all! :)
