Have any of you guys had experience with the scope mounts that allow for mounting a long eye relief scope up in front of the receiver? I don't shoot as well with open sights as I did at one time due to my old eyes. I drilled & tapped the receiver for a Weaver side mount, but really don't like having the scope over to the side of the bore. Any advise on this problem is appreciated.

I have a Burris forward mount on a M-94 Trapper. It works fine there are several other makers of foward mounts. I beieve there are several threads on the lever gun list on this subject.

John Taylor;
I hav two Win'94's with Burris Scout scope bases mounted . One carb. & one rifle.My only regret is that they could have been mounted a little lower. I also have a Win 94 with a Redfield base and scope. It predates the Scout Concept by a decade or so but is essentially the same thing. Mine is a 2 1/2x PCH in a 3/4" tube. The base contains an open sight. I may be tempted to try one of the AO systems bases but can't really see an advantage. I am learning to like the set up. It's quite a change from a tradional scope system. My eyes require assistance so I'm getting used to it. Practice.
ONE CORRECTION, Long eye relief scopes are for hand guns and while they may work for some folks the IER (intermediate eye relief) scopes are a better solution. Pepe Ray

i have the rem 600 version of the old redfield scout mount (they called it the "FrontIER") and the caps were in the literature. i love it, but mine does not have the built-in rear sight like some (but i found one on e-bay that does, mine for $30). the big help to me seems to be the exit pupil of the scope is a lot bigger, making it much faster to get on target. the scope mounted is the 60's era 2.5X redfield 3/4" IER that still works like a champ.

monty;
I think that the exit pupil benifit is a function of the scope being an IER rather than an LER. Agree??

Thanks for all of the good advise. I have looked on some of the sites but they do not show exactly how the these mounts are attached to the bbl. I assume that they use the dove-tail, but how many tapped screw holes must be drilled. (my 94 is an old type = early 70's)? I'll probably go with the Burris as I don't know if the Redfield would still be available.

That nick name "Monty" has special meaning for me as eventhough my dad's name was Norm most of the locals called him Monty throughout his life. He is the one that instilled the need in me to tramp the wilds with rifle & handgun and to spend all of my extra coins on bullet moulds & gun powder. My grandfather was in the 9th Infantry & fought in China in the Boxer rebellion around 1900 & when he returned he married my grandmother here and then they homesteaded out southwest of Edmington Alberta where I think that my father was born. I think that that wild life got the best of my grandmother and they returned to western NY State after a few years. Well, I guess I digress.

Thanks, John

John Taylor,

Wild West Guns makes a scout mount that fits over the rear sight of Marlin leveractions. The mount requires drilling and tapping the barrel. I'm not sure if they make a Winchester mount but you can check at www.wildwestguns.com.

I use this mount on my guide gun. It works well.

John Taylor;
The Burris sight uses the middle sight dovetail but the bbl must also be D&T. Ashley Outdoors (AO) also makes a wraparound mount for some Marlins an some Wins. I've never seen one up close but to read the posts they are the only thing going. Choices, Choices. Pepe Ray
