Hi Guys!

I've been browsing here for a couple of weeks. I was first linked here concerning an issue with a Vaquero cylinder problem.

I'll soon be picking up a Winchester '94 Trapper in .45LC that's in my Dad's estate. He used it in his SASS cowboy shoots. I'll probably use it for plinking, cans, steel targets and such but I'm considering hunting blacktail deer here in the Pacific NW. I'd like to hear some opinions on it's hunting capabilities.

I suppose a breif introduction would be in order. I was born in '58, grew up in central Washington state till I was 10. We then moved to the Willamette Valley here in Oregon. We hunted and fished all through my childhood. Got my first .22 when I was 7. When I graduated from high school, I went to Montana and worked for an outfitter for one year as a guide and wrangler. Then, craving more adventure, I joined the Marine Corp reserve. Trained as an armorer and in motor transport.
I worked in machine shops running lathes and various other equipment till '83 when I started in the telecommunications industry. Been doing that till now.
I've got quite an assortment of handguns, longguns and shotguns. No leverguns yet, this will be my first. I've always wanted one...or two...or....well you know! :D

Thanks guys!

Welcome! This is a great sight and you will learn alot. I am still learning much from the many years of experience on the board. Sounds like the perfect first levergun, and from your dad to boot.....I'm jealous! :p

Howdy Clint.
I think you like the New lever gun, probably like it so much you will have to go out and get more. As far as hunting blacktail with it I think it will work fine at around 100 yards and under. You can load the 45LC to be a good deer round. I have a Marlin Limited in 45LC with a 16.5 in barrel. It handles nice and packs a pretty good punch. That first deer you drop with it will be pretty special, since it was you dads rifle. Congrats and lets us know how it shoots. Will be expecting to see pictures of that blacktail when you get it.

The .45Colt will anchor a deer from as far away as you can hit them. Depending on sights and load accuracy that can be further than we have business shooting at deer. (in my opinion)

Might I suggest a little read at Paco Kelly's site

Enjoy,

Clint,

I am glad the Trapper is staying in the family and I am sure you will enjoy using it.

Thanks for the welcome fellas!

I checked out that Levergun link Scotty, very informative! I thought I knew a few things about the history but now I know better!

I'm looking forward to learning more and sharing my experiences with the good folks on this forums.
