This past year I took my 1895 in 45-70 hunting in east Texas. I hated it. It was heavy, bulky, and I just didn't get along with it. I took some heat for that opinion on the old MT forum, but it still didn't change my mind. Well, I did some looking around, and found a guy that wanted to trade his 1895GS for my full size 1895.
Just received the stainless guide gun yesterday, and man oh man what a difference!! The just BEGS to go for a walk in the woods! The balance is night and day when compared with the full size '95, and I'm glad I made the trade.
This afternoon I am going to put a scope on it just to see if the balance and "joy to carry" factor are affected. If so, I'll leave it scope-less and put a Williams WGRS and firesight on it.
If anyone is trying to decide between a fullsize or the guide gun, there ain't no decision at all.

Yep, gotta agree about them guide guns. Just got back, yesterday from my south Texas hog hunt. I took my .45-70 GG, and my .30-30 handi-rifle. Although I only got one meat hog, the GG did it WONDERFULLY! It was a joy to carry in the thick, rough, mountainous country we were hunting north of Del Rio. When I go on my next Texas hog hunt, I think it will be the only gun I take.

txpitdog, I remember that thread! Man you took flack for that. One thing I didnt understand was that you DIDNT have the guide gun......thought you did, therefore found it difficult for you to say what you did about it being heavy. My apologies, sir.
Now, isnt the guide gun light?? It's gonna belt ya a bit harder! Had mine out of the cabinet yesterday just wishing I could shoot it. Settled for waxing that pretty walnut stock :(

Yeah, the banter back and forth on that thread was kinda fun. After holding the guide gun, I can't figure out why anyone would want anything else. Can't wait to shoot it. Got a few spare shells from 4 different loads. Everything from Remington 405gr CL @ 1300 to Speer 400's at 1800! And I will be bringing my PAST pad with me!

Yea, what a difference that GS must be from your 1895! I remember that thread also. I felt you were delt with rather harshly and didn't understand that. What may be one man's pleasure is another man's poison! I prefer the shorter rifles like the GG myself. Your new GS will belt you more so be prepared for it, however you will come to be adjusted to it quickly! Also, I can already tell you'll be happier with it than your ol' 1895! The GG style rifles handle so much better to me!

You'll remember my remark telling the bullies to at least offer you "a little cheese with your wine" :)
My 10-22 with 16" heavy barrel is heavier than the guide gun. But now I've "larded it up" as DLA would say with a red dot scope.
You'll love shooting that thing...and stainless, too!

Yes the GS is a thing of beauty...it's the only lever action rifle that I own and my wife calls it the "Pretty One".

txpitdog - I remember that posting war from MT! I love my Guide Gun, it handles well in the tight places and is easier to carry all day than it's larger brothers! I have to admit that if I'm doing some hard hiking and climbing I'll go with my M77 Ultra Light instead (1 1/2 pounds less!). For me anything over 22 inches long is a pain to walk with. Enjoy it ! The other guys don't know what their missing! :D CEJ..

Hello Riflemen: Yup, I remember that post. You sounded like my brother in law who I talked in to buying a Marlin 450. It has that 'itty bitty barrel' to and he raves about the rifle. He had a Remington 350 mag.(guide), model 600 I believe, and he had thought that was the ticket. I never hear about that rifle any more and he sold it :p I have shot the 450 and it is a quick rifle without question. He has it scoped with a 1-4x Luepold and he uses it for elk and deer. Me, well, I have a good old standard 1895 45-70 with the 22" barrel. Being used to much larger and longer rifles this rifle feels just right for me. Good luck to you folks and great to see you here on this fine forumn. Life is good, BestLever
