Do any of you have any experience shooting the .45 Schofield in a Rossi or Puma 92? I would really appreciate your report and analysis on this. I would like to use it in my .454 Puma 92, if possible.

dzrtram,
The original .45 S&W (Schofield) cartridge has a larger rim than the .45 Colt, so I doubt it would feed and eject properly.
However the .45 Colt Government, sometimes refered to the .45 Schofield has the same rim dia as the .45 Colt and will function in my Rossi.
When I read your question I got out the five rounds I have and tried them. Worked fine.
If the currently manufactured cases have the same rim as the .45 colt they should work.
That is if your gun will cooperate. Mines been gone through and reworked so it will feed most anything.

What all did you do to your gun for better function?

dzrtram,
I don't know. I sent it to M&M Gunsmithing in Virginia, he's the Rossi, warrenty gun smith. He worked it over.
The only thing I can see when I look it, is he altered the carrier so I could use the longer Keith SWCs. I can't see anything else. But he had to have done something because it just wouldn't feed before and now does.
My only theory is maybe it had the wrong cartridge guides in it. Don't know for sure.
Maybe I should call him and ask?

[QUOTE=J Miller]dzrtram,

This is a common alteration. I think a lot of people are doing this now. I understand it is possible to shoot .45 S&W also, so that makes a lot of versatility, espcecially for Cowboy Shooters
I can't see anything else. But he had to have done something because it just wouldn't feed before and now does.
This is my main interest. I'd like to get it to feed as many varieties of .45 reliably as possible.

If you do, I would sure like to know the details. Heck, if it ain't just what I want when I get it, I'll send it to M&M. How do I get in touch with them. Does he haved a web site?

I hope I don't need him. He's not taking any work until April 1. But, I would still like to find out what he does to these guns to make them feed/cycle smoothly.
Thanks for the info.

dzrtram,
I talked to Mike at M&M this morning. He couldn't remember exactly what he did to my gun, but he said he has a system of things he checks out when they don't feed.
He checks:
>to verify the carrier is raising up high enough,
>that the carrier stays up when the bolt is moving forward.
>the ejector, this is the part that pushes the cartridge forward and if the face of the ejector is wrong it wont feed right. He altered this part on my rifle.
>the cartridge guides; the distance between them, the angle and cut of the slot the rims move up through, and the machined area on the bottom of the guides that guide the rims to the slots. He said sometimes he alters the original ones, or chooses new ones from a box of spare cartridge guides he has on hand. He said he believes he did this to my gun, as mine show no signs of alteration.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Joe. I just got an email from Mike. It seems I had a URL for another M&M. Mike is definitely taking work.. The other guy isn't.
I appreciate your help. I want to learn everything I can about this gun. It seems like the carrier is always at the heart of any modifications.
Thanks, :)
