View Full Version : accuracy fom my 336
I went to the range today with my 336 for the first time. I was shooting Win 150gr power points. My question is I was getting 1 1/2in 3 shot groups, is this about what everyone else gets for 3 shots at 100yds. I am used to getting 1/2in groups at the same distance with my 7mm mag so I am a little curious. 336A

That's about par, but some do better. Try a different bullet weight or brand. Loosening the barrel band(s) and forend wood often helps, especially if the spread is vertical.

Thank you for the quick reply Jack, I figured the next time I go shoot I will try some remington and see how they do. Also waiting for the weather to warm up some to. It was 40 today had some problems feeling the trigger. So next time I go it will be about 50-60 degrees, I'm sure that will help too. BTW there was no vertical stringing all were nice triangular groups got a nice 1in group @ 50 prior to moveing to 100yds though. again thanks for the reply.

I should add that some do better when the front bag is right back against the action and IIRC old Al Miller finally got one to perform when he put the action ON the front bag. I've noticed that my .35 Remington shoots a couple of inches high off the bags, compared to what it does hand-held.

336A,
1 1/2" groups at 100 yd is darn good with your 30-30. Don't let anyone kid you about that. You are good to go.

I would agree with VTDW - go with it, and see how close you can get to that from standing using an upright support, and sitting useing yourself as support.

336A,
1 1/2 groups at 100 yards with the 30-30 is nothing to sneeze at. You might be able to tighten them up some, but even if you cant, that will more than kill a deer.

Thats pretty good groups, as was mentioned, try a different
round or two. important thing is if you can consistantly
and reliably hit decent groups like that, you'll do fine. Also
have you thought about going out to 150 yds? I know it
is a bit dumb sounding..... but sometimes when you reach
a bit further, your mechanics can improve. I occasionally
reach out to 150 -200 yards, No I won't tell you that I
hit 1 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards, but It makes me feel a
bit more confident at 100 yards, good luck.

Thats very acceptable for the heavy 30-30 round. Can't compare to 7mm smaller and flat shooting ..

I shoot reloads, but have always had tighter groups from my 336-A with 170-grain bullets.
You'll get a better group by firing just two shots. Then let her cool down. Fire two more.
2 inches at 100 yards with just about any Marlin in 30-30 is normal. Some are better but all get the job done.

Yesterday I shot one 100 yard 5 shot group with my 336 30-30 that was less than 1 inch using the Speer 150 gr flat point and 32 grains of H332. I am pretty pleased with that. When the barrel heats up accuracy suffers. Best to let the barrel cool down between shoots I guess.

My 30Aw (economy 336) rarely shoots under 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards. However, my 336 .35REM can shoot moa and sometimes less. Here is a target I shot last fall with the 336. Note: A locking gun vise was used.

PS. It's good to see some old friends here from MT. I've been looking for a new home. This place is feeling quiet comfortable.
Soory fellas been away for awhile. Can't wait to get the range, and shoot some moreright now the weather hasn't been the best. But my next range session will be fun as I am getting a new trigger installed on my savage tactical, plus I will have to shoot the 336 some more. I really like T.R.s' adivice on the 2 shots then wait awhile to let the barrel cool. The first 2 rounds of those win power points will kiss one anothe at 100yds. Plus I am going to try my hand at Ranch Dogs' postal match. I am going to give the Win hollow points a try also as soon as this weather gets nice. Can't wait to see everyones results for the postal match good luck and good shooting I know that I will need it considering the caliber of folks that participated last year. Lever puller that is an awsome group, looks like I am going to be in real trouble if you use that 35 in the postal match :) .

Have no fear, 336A. Using my locking vise is against the rules. The ole .35 seems to lose alittle of it's accuracy when I factor in myself. It's always a warm feeling when I hear of fellow .35REM shooter out there.
Good luck in the PMII. I hope to see us .35 shooters at the top.

Once I switched to the 200-grain Rem Core-lokts in my 35, I got two straight one-inch groups at 100, and I know the rifle can do better. I was shooting off my elbows in swirling winds, but I went out and bought all of that ammo i could find, and once the weather stablizes, will try it again.
Now if I could just get my stainless 44 to shoot well......
