I went to Darwin back in 1978 on an American warship and spent a day in the bush chasing and shooting things. My experience with the big Reds is a bit different than that described here. On the move, they can be as much challenge as I want. I found the pigs not much different than hunting them here and the buffs, well... easy. We were there in the dry season so where there was water, there was game.

I vividly recall being told during our port brief that we should not try to drink the locals under the table, because it couldn't be done. I found this not to be true, you CAN drink them under the table, litterally. However, after a short nap, they are back up and charging on while you are resembling the Leaning Tower of Pizza! Gallons of beer, buckets of Buggs and great company make for some wonderful memories.

Man I loved the Northern Territory, the land, the people... all of it. Sadly, I'm certain it is not the same.

Mate the NT is the last good place lesft in Aussie. Just moved back down south from a couple of years up in the NT. LOVED it. Shot Buff, crocs and Scrub Bulls all for free and all with the traditional owners backing me. I miss it!

Bar staff at B & S balls are always under pressure. Large drums with ice to cool the drinks, and spirits were dispensed with a device designed for drenching sheep. The farmer who had voluntiered his paddock usually had to plow it afterwards to smooth out all the ruts from the circle work.

What else is good to hunt there?

As a side note, what are the laws there concerning carrying a pocket knife and such? I'm on my way down under come December, and like carrying my Kershaw Leek. Is that possible?
Where are you hunting?

Australia is a big place and the game varies substantially, just like the USA.

If you're up North make sure you go fishing between hunts!

I live in the state of Victoria. We have pigs, roo's, wallabies (culled under permit) rabbits, foxes, feral dogs and cats, Sambar and Fallow deer (deer permits apply) that can be hunted during December. Fishing is always an option in the hot weather in Vic.

December is probably not the best time to hunt unless you want to be burnt to a crisp by the sun, but it's better weather for drinking the amber fluid.

Like all the other posts suggest, 'roo shooting is easy in the spotlight with anything from .22 to .220 Swift being the the best calibers. Of course heavier calibers work too. For something different walk in on them and hit them on the hop.

Don't carry a knife in Australia unless you have a lawful excuse. Under no circumstances carry a knife into or within 20M of a pub or night spot, as large fines apply if your caught. In the bush, it's not a problem.

Good Luck

Oh it is Mate, it's just that the Greenies are trying to get a foothold, but we Territorians are a determined bunch and just won't let 'em in.

Most of the people in the NT are the same, we consider the rest of Australians to be *Southerners* and resist any changes with gusto, we are the Top end, the rest of Oz are States, there is a difference believe me..

Oh and fellas, Rumpig was dead right, Roos are just like shooting fish in a barrel, Shot pro for over twenty years for skins and meat.

And beautiful boots they make too. It happens to be the only leather that doesn't stretch in any direction.
Stupid reality is though: we shoot 'em; we skin 'em & we tan 'em -= then send the leather to the bleedin' Italians to make into shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
