FFg or FFFg?

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I am new to reloading with blackpowder. If loading for the 45/70 cartridge, would using FFg or FFFg be recommended? It is my understanding that the finer granulation would give higher velocities, what about fouling or shot to shot uniformity? Any comments would be appreciated.

FFg or FFFg

FFg is a best choice for 45-70 for most shooting say 100 to 800 yards. However if your trying to make your 45-70 into a 1000 match gun then the FFFg may work better. In my 45-70 Goex FFg (latest stuff) with a 520 gr Postell bullet 1230 fps at the muzzle is what she Chrono's. Thats with a 32 inch barrel also. With FFFg there may be more of a fouling issue in hot dryier climes. I know some well known shooters using FFFg Goex and FFFg Swiss to use for their long range loads in the 45-70.

Good Luck

Have had better luck with FFg than with FFFg in the 45/70, but its worth it to try both. For me, it's an accruacy isse rather than speed, and I just find that the FFg loads shoot better in this rifle,,,,yours could run on adifferent set of rules.

Fouling is a bit dependent on where you live...I'm down here in the humid south and that kind of hard "cake" fouling seldom is a problem with +90% humidity...can drive you nuts out in Arizona.

In everything larger than the 45/70, FFg is the choice...although I have a 50/70 that likes Fg (not as easy to find). Get lower velocity, but better accuracy...and lets face it, nothing is going to make the 50/70 shoot flat enough to make a few FPS all that important.
