Has anyone here tried this trail boss powder in the 45-70 with cast bullets? If you have I wouold be interested in knowing how it worked out and with what bullet you may have used..My bullets is the lyman 457125 500 gr. round nose.....
Check the Hodgdon site for load data appropriate to your gun. It's a relatively quick powder intended for lead bullet BP cartridges, so it can't get very high velocities at safe pressures, as a result. It's for Cowboy Action and other reduced load applications. It's very bulky, though, so those low loads fill the case better than the charges of fast pistol powder most people use for reduced loads. It burns very cleanly.
Recent Handloader magazine carried an article about using this powder with any rifle cartridge and how to figure start powder charges. Very simple method used figuring the start charge which you can fine tune some. As already mention by unclenick its main use is reduced loads with lead bullets.
There are quite a few posts across various reloading/shooting fora. The method is quite simple. You load a case - any case - to the point where the base of the bullet would be if seated. Dump that and weigh it. That is your max load; 70% of that is your start charge.

Thanks for the information you guys...
Pete---that sounds like a lot of powder but then again who knows...I had a guy give me 3 lbs of it and thought, what the heck-I migh as well try it out....Thanks again
It's surprisingly little powder (by weight). The reason is the bulk density of Trail Boss is very low. About 0.32 grams per cc last time I measured some. Most rifle powders vary between about 0.85 and 1.10 grams per CC, so this stuff can be over 3 times lighter in a given volume.
