The rolling block was mfg in 1883 by the Norway firm in the 11xxxx cal but it is only .001 shorter than the 45/70 and the bore slugs .457 so I shoot 45/70 BP loads only.
The 1874 is a 45.1/10 or 45/70 made in Montana by Shiloh and was made in '91 and you can shoot anything you can stand as far as loads.that are in speck.

I don't believe I've ever seen a butt plate like that. May I ask the story behind it? How can one not like an old roller? Nice.

If you are talking about the butt plate on the 1874 Shiloh it is lead and it was on the rifle when I got it used. I have been tempted to take it off and did for awhile and it increases the felt recoil. I am going to order a new butt plate from Shiloh just keep putting it off. It weighs 1.75# but the rifle balances great, I think the previous owner was shooting it standing and the long 34" barrel kind of over balanced it, but with the added weight it is fine. I do not shoot standing as my back will not allow that I only shoot from bags and a bench.
