Question Best 30-30 cast bullets

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

[B] from your past shooting experiences, what would you consider as the best 30-30 cast bullet a) for shooting and general plinking b) for hunting?

Brand of mold, type, w/wo. gas checks, type of metal used, quenched or not.
PP.

I have only tried one, that is the Lyman 31141 (or 311041, as I think it is now called.) The ones I have are cast from Lyman #2 alloy by a friend of mine. He has since moved, but I still have about 200 left.
This is a flatnose bullet designed for the 30-30, but shoots well in 30-06 and 308 also. Marshall sells bullets cast from this mold, too, but you have to ask for them.
I haven't hunted with them, but I've shot well over a thousand of them in the last two years and couldn't be happier!

PS- This is a gas check bullet.

IDShooter,

Unfortunately 30-30s differ widely in chamber dimensions so you're going to need to experiment in order to find the best CB for your gun... or at least find someone having experience with a similar gun. If one were to consider just Winchester M94 Carbines, for example, the throats were changed at one point in their post '64 evolution which changed their preference in CB design. My 1953 vintage loves SAECO 316 but hates Lyman 311041 seated to about 2.525". Perhaps if I Lee factory crimp 311041 at about the middle of the lead band I'll get better results. The problem with that, however, is the lube just forward the gas check will be in the case's body. I'll have to experiment to see if that's a problem.

Anyway, if you need a starting point (you could provide us specifics about your rifle) I recommend LeeC309170. That way you'll learn something without investing much.

Forty Four,
It's interesting to hear about different results with the various bullets. I have had nothing but excellent results with the 311041. I have shot them in a 1980 vintage Win 94, a 1978 Marlin 336-A, a Win 70 Classic 30-06, a Win 670 30-06, and a Rem 700 .308. In the .308 and '06, I seat out so the rifling engraves the bullet just a bit. The 30-30's have both shot well with the bullet seated to crimp in the crimp groove. I'm getting MOA with the bolt guns, under 2 MOA with the levers and open sights.

Thumbs up Lyman 311041

This topic is of great interest to me at present as im looking for a cheap supply of bullets to feed my marlin .30-30 L.T.S and my M-bolt .308

Ive been using the Hornady 170 gn FN in both but at approx $35 per 100 (heads) ive decided to invest in the Lyman 311041 mould which ive just ordered.

Has anyone got field experience with this bullet when cast with wheel weights ??

I been told many have had got results sizing this bullet though a Lee .311 die kit ?? Im a great fan of the Lee sizer kit my hand dipped .444 bullets come out uniform and very clean......

Im also interested in what weight it drops from the mould with WW ?? Perhaps some kind person could enlighten me ??

Gack!!! $35 / 100????? That's about a 10 or 15 cent bullet here. Nosler Partitions aren't much more. Holy cow I'd be looking for something cheaper too.
