Question 95 Mauser (Chilean)

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Well I've done it again, bought before I thought. This 1895 Chilean Mauser has been converted to 7.62 NATO. All seems solid and head space checks out OK. I'm just wooried that because of the 7.62 NATO coversion that factory 7.62 ammo may be too hot for this action. I have considered handloading with AA5744 and Beartooths 140 gr. GC in .309 to keep pressures down. Any thoughts on what Ihave got my self into? P.S. It came with a really cool bayonet. Conagher

Can use this site's search function...been a lot of disccusion about the suitibility of different .308 conversions as well as very long discussions on .308 civialian vs. NATO pressures.

NO ONE seems in 100% agreement about the suitibility.

Basicaly I avoid the problem by loading my empty .308 cases with jacketed data for the .300savage. My cast bullet loads are already way-way below standard pressure.

So...my advice is to treat it like a .300savage that just happens to use .308 brass.

I've got a '95 Chilean short rifle in 7.62x51. I did fire about 10 rounds of .308 thru it, before I knew better or became more conservative. Headspace is absolute minimum. Now, I use it as a cast bullet shooter mostly, or .300 Savage level jacketed loads as mentioned.

Thanks , I'll do some more shearching but at least we may be on the right track now. My brother-in-law has got me hooked on shooting old mausers, I'm still kicking myself for not getting a M96 in 6.5x55 when they were plentiful, now the price on them seems to have gone up by 50% than they were just 3 or 4 years ago.

In his reloading guide of years back, P.O. Ackley mentioned that he knew of many .308 & .243 conversions of the small-ring Mausers and wasn't aware of any problems with them. I converted my own M93 to .257R and had no problems with normal loads. As mentioned, the answer is prudent loading.
