What Mod is this Mauser?

the only markings I can find on this rifle is (MAUSER 30 CAL. US GOVERNMENT 1906 GERMANY) IT has a straight bolt handle, 3 position safety large receiver ring,w/ a cut out for a stripper clip, single trigger,22" barrel w/ ramped front sight, redfield peep back and small sling swivel attached to the barrel.

Sounds like it's been chambered as a .30-06. Any other markings?

I'm going to move this to the ex-military rifles forum for you.

Probably a sporterized 98, but just a guess without pictures or a detailed description of the action.

Pictures would help. The 1906 date is interesting, that's early for the 30-03 or 30-06 cartridge. My guess is it might be the 30 Gov./ sometimes called the .30 US / or the 30-40 Krag cartridge. Most likely not military but a custom job of US to German or visa versa. Pictures if you can or more detailed description....

And welcome to the forums !.

John...

The 30-40 Krag is the "30 AMY", the "30 Government" is the 30-03/30-06.

".30 Cal. U S Government 1906" -- that's .30-'06. The date signifies the ammo, not the date of the rifle.

I lernt the difference when my brother inherited his vintage 1905 Winchester 1895 from our grandmothers brother, it clearly states "30 GOV" on the barrel, we assumed it was the "Krag", NOPE!, it's a 30-03!, it took some research and development to get it shooting!, we went from literally NOT hitting a 4x8 sheet of plywood to about 2 1/2" groups.

Thanks for replay, the bolt handle is straight, large receiver ring,(1-3/8) the safety is 3 position, trigger screws center - center ( 7-7/8 ) double front lug one in the back. the ejector has what I think is a part # 30

Thanks, I do know it is 30-06, wish I knew if It was a 98, m98 98k kar98k or what the heck ever the closest thing I have found is the m98 (oberndorf sporter)but the bolts are different unless it is not the original bolt Witch is highly possible.

Tim,

As stated pictures would help termendously IDing your rifle. Sounds like a sporter military G98 action. Any proof marks under the stock? The style of script/lettering would also help in IDing the rifle. Is the safety on the rear of the cocking peice or on the side?

The rifle has a picture of a knight and sward on a horse and says BAYARD under it. Belgian I would say.
