I told Ken that I would post these pictures if he would explain why all of the bullet holes were in this pig's hide. There's got to be a story there somewhere. He must have eally been mad at it!

These danged things are tough!

A herd of wild swine came moving through the high grass (could just see the backs of the bigger ones and the flapping ears of the smaller ones) headed to the feeder with corn/powdered strawberry jello mix beneath it. Picked out the biggest back I could see through the weeds and tried for a spine shot, using my Ruger M77 (tang safety) 7mm Rem Mag loaded with Federal 175 gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw ammo. With the shot, lots of squealing and panic under the feeder. Pigs lighting off in all directions. The target went down, then back up. Racked the bolt and sent another TBBC into the spine and it went down for the count.

Decided it was nailed, so got out of the stand, walked back to the Expedition, got out of the coveralls, found my pulling rope and gloves and drove down to the feeder, about 125 yds from the stand. Darn'd if there wasn't a pig laying in the path toward the stand and about 20 yds from the feeder! Using the door frame, placed another shot into the back of the head. Pig quit moving. Drove on down to the feeder to see if maybe I'd hit two pigs and that this was just one of them. Didn't see any more laying around, so went back to drag this one away from the area. Would you believe the tail and an ear were still moving?! Very carefully placed the 4th shot into the ear hole and that finally brought an end to all movement.

My congratulations to those that can ground one of these animals with a single .223 Rem. shot!

I hear you get taxed on all the unfired rounds that you bring back into AZ...

Or, perhaps, he heard us asking to shoot a lot of pigs, and figured that 4 rounds into one pig, was mathematically the same as 1 round each into 4 different pigs?

We may never know!

Hogs can be tough sometimes, or not. My son and I each took a medium size hog on a hunt a few years ago, both with neck shots. He popped his with an '06 150gr bullet, took the spine right out. Mine was with a 180grRN from a 30/40AI, went thru about 1/2 or 3/4" above the spine, still DRT. Shock? Dunno. Didn't matter, it was a bo' hog and couldn't eat it. Goatwhiskers the Elder

Yea, Ken, they are pretty tough. I shoot them with what I've got on me. And after hunting season, that's usually a 223. Some fall right there and others, take off for the hills.
I was just joshing you about all the holes in that hog. I thought you were trying to "cool the meat" as fast as possible so it would taste better.
With all of the argueing we do about calibers, it still boils down to where you hit them, and that doesn't mean they are going to drop dead on the spot.

My wife shot one with a .22-250. It headed for the hills. 15 minutes later my neighbor shot one with a .308, dropped on the spot. Turned out my wife's shot was a lung shot. He shot the same darn hog just standing by one of his corrals. Still on its feet until he dropped it. I don't think I'd go very far with a hole in my lung.

I pulled the film on a camera mounted on a feed station that I never hunted.
That's a nice 10 point worn out by the rut. The camera dates are wrong.
Looks like he got raked on the side pretty good. Also another nice 8 pt, then an old nasty hog during the day. Again, I never hunted this stand after I shot a buck early, but there was a lot of activity on it.
Going to try for a hog this week-end there

15 degrees with ice and sleet blowing in. Think I'll wait a day or two.
That's a pretty fair buck standing there. Hocks were still black even in January.

Here in SC we just take a shoulder of little ones like that and release him to grow older. They will grow a new shoulder.
