Tennessee M/L hunt
I didn't have any luck during the early Kentucky M/L season a few weeks ago. Tennessee's early M/L season is now a full two weeks long and started this past weekend. Saturday I went with a Buddy to a spot where we'd seen a lot of good sign while scouting last weekend. Saturday morning he only saw two does and I only saw one doe, waaaay off. I hunted Saturday afternoon and saw zilch.
I was in my stand 1 hr before S/R Sunday morning and saw a deer right at legal light. I grunted him to a stop, broadside at 100 yards and took my shot. I was sure I heard the bullet hit, but I couldn't see a darn thing through the smoke and by the time it cleared, I couldn't hear him running any more. I waited for good light before looking and it took me a while to find him (never found a blood trail) I finally spotted him laying in the weeds in an adjacent field, after he'd run about 100 yards from where I shot him.
Not a huge rack, but nice & symetrical. He was a big bodied deer though and I had a heck of a time loading him by myself in the back of my truck (I'm sure that wasn't because I'm getting older ) There's a picture of the heart he ran 100 yards with. The rifle is a CVA Optima shooting 295gr Powerbelts over 100gr of 777 (pellets). Nikon Prostaff 2-7x33 did the job in very low light.
