I don't know where to put this or if its even right to ask. However myself and a couple friends we're talking and a debate arose if police are trained or intend to shoot to kill. I don't know if any one would want to answer this question, but I would like some opinions either from LEO's or anyone really. I hope no one ever has to be placed in the position to potentially take anothers life, but I whold like to know what people think on the matter. Maybe even as a person who carries a gun for self defence. Thanks

Years ago they could bounce a bullet off the ground to wound some one if they wanted to do that , but not now !

Some departrments had a practice of bouncing shotgun pellets (#4 or #6 shot) of the pavement to "sting" people for riot control. When the lawsuits started, the practice stopped! When deadly force is justified, shooting to stop is still the practice. Obviously, the application of deadly force can and does resort in death, but death is not the desired result, at least not under oath!

I was taught to shoot to stop. It is the crook's problem if he dies. I have never pulled the 870 out of the car except to check that it was loaded with the striker down, safety on - magazine full-chamber empty. My "customers are behind two fences with the second covered in razor wire. Alarms sense motion against the fence, even a bird landing can set off the alarms. We signed a document when hired indicating we knew we might have to stop someone during our career. I will shoot according to policy and procedures established by the department and worry about the rest later. I may be saving another officer's life or the general public. Not however, just for the sake of property. Clear as mud? Maybe. After a shooting most departments give you admin. leave and mandatory time with the nice psychologist. Later boys and girls. 'Dito.

I was taught to shoot two, minimum, to center mass. If you have determined shooting is necessary you have already determined that killing is justified. We did not shoot, non-violent wanted offenders, we were authorized to shoot wanted violent offenders to prevent their getting away. Warning shots are not allowed. Bremerton PD 1975-80 retired/

The alternative to shoot to kill is shoot to "wound" and only an idiot would try and do that.

If you need to pull your trigger it is because you or your families life is in immediate danger (be you a cop or not) and when that is the case, you shoot at the center of the body TO STOP THE THREAT....and the best way to stop a threat is TO KILL IT.

Thats why I carry the MOST destructive ammo I can find in my carry gun (usually Glaser and hydroshocks mixed), so the threat is stopped in ONE SHOT not five or six.

They shoot to wound only on TV, if you do it in real life, you will be real dead, because that "other guy" ain't shoot to wound too.
