Advice on picking 1 gun from 400

My mom recently inherited almost 400 guns of all shapes and size (from pistols to a 20 mm). They include a Colt Super 38 Auto, a rare Colt 22lr conversion (one of 112 ever made), etc. In any case, I get to pick one gun out of this with a max book value of $400 (as professionally appraised). The rest are going to be sold at auction. I have decided to pick a gun that will eventually become my son's when he gets older so I want something that he can shoot but also with a bit of history or "cool factor" if possible. I've tried to narrow the list, but the task is nearly impossible. Was wondering if anyone was interested in helping me pick one of these? I've included the estimated prices so you can get a sense of condition.

Any and all opinions greatly appreciated!!

First off welcome to the forum.

Kinda envious of your position but I'd be equally overwhelmed to pick ONE.

I guess for me, the Winchester Model 52 could do it. Should be a very accurate rifle and fun shooter for you and your son alike. Definately something that could be handed down and used for generations.

Agree with Bob that some of those seem low. It depends on the condition the guns are in, but they may be more like dealer prices, and the estate may be hoping to sell the whole lot to one dealership, high and low alike? On the other hand, an auctioneer may get the prices up, using those listed as the starting point.

I agree with those who picked Winchester 73. While there are a few guns there that are cool based on their obscure factor, the Winchester is even better based on it's importance in history. It would have been easy if it was chambered in 44-40, but any period Winchester is a keeper.

OK, gdeckler, this post is old - which did you choose?

Stealthchaser13 provided the answer, actually - choose the intrac, and go down to the hardware store and get a couple of jugs of muriatic acid. Shoot that anti-gun mom, and dump the piece of junk ( the intrac, not the corpse ) into the acid, which will destroy the evidence.

Then, you inherit all 400!

Hmmm... I wouldn't go THAT far, but if they're old firearms, and INHERITED, why not pass them to YOU??? I guess I'm a believer that if something is kept by one, then "inherited" by another, maybe they should stay with the family. Unless she needs the money to keep a house or something. But you only need to keep ONE???? Hmmmm....

My Pa

My Pa would rise from the dead, and whack us around the block we ever sold his guns after he died. And I'd take the Win 73 too, unless there was a model 42 lurking around, but it'd be worth more'n $400.

My Pa has it all figured out. When he goes, we 3 boys get to take turns choosing from the collection until they are all divied up, oldest (son) to youngest of course. He has enough stuff where it doesn't matter which ones I would get, first 3-4 picks would be good ones.
