I reload for several family members in NM and I live in Denver. I have no plans for driving to visit them, so, I'd like to get the ammo to my cousin and brother-in-law within a week or two so that they can get some range time before the hunting seasons. I have never shipped ammo in the mail, UPS, or any carrier. I will ask the mailman this week about it and call UPS, Fedex, DHL, whomever. I know there will be a hazmat fee. That's about as much as I know. I don't know what kind of container or box I have to use, if I need any special labeling, etc. I'm shipping 50 rounds of .243, .270, and 100 rounds of .204 Ruger and 40 SW. Total weight probably about 10 - 12 pounds. Anyone who has shipped loaded ammo, I would appreciate your knowledge. No, I do not have an FFL. - Kevin
USPS is out. You are limited to the private GROUND carriers, so don't wait until the last minute thinking you can Next Day Air ship. I use FedEx Ground myself. You will probably have to ship it from an actual carrier location, and not an affiliated "Mail and More"-type store.
There shouldn't be a HazMat fee for loaded ammo; that's just for powder or primers. If you hear something on the phone that doesn't make sense, ask the same question at another location and see if you get the same answer.
I will go to UPS in person and ask questions. And FEDEX. Seems odd that loaded ammo has less hoops to jump through than components. But its not up to me to decide that discussion. I appreciate your responses. - Kevin
MAC702 - As you mentioned, I was not able to ship from a "pack & ship" place. Had to go to the UPS distribution center in Denver. No hassle at all. $14 for a package that weighed 9 pounds.
I thank you all for your help. My in-laws will have plenty of time to get some shooting practice before deer season arrives.
