So, a few years ago my house got broken into and all of my guns were stolen. they were all kept in a wood and glass case. Well about half an hour ago, I got a call from my sheriff saying that they recovered 3 of my guns. This got me to thinking, I've already replaced most of my guns, looks like now I have something to tinker with as well. lol. I have little respect for my local police, but we have one he!! of a Sheriffs department. I'm heading out to pick up my guns from them as soon as I can.
But this does raise a point I'd like to say, keep your guns in a safe. I never had my house broken into in the 24 years I've lived here. I didn't think that it would happen to me. But it goes to show that no matter where you live it can happen to you. So don't let those crooks and thieves steal your guns and valuables. Keep them in a good safe.

Wolfen,
I don't live in Texas anymore. But when I did I owned three houses and all three were broken into. 1968, I caught the thief & his buddy in the house. Got a 38 put in my tummy. in the front and I sit on now. Lost a pistol and an 03 Springfield in 30-06 + TV & all my wife's good jewelry. Cops got him three days later and the Judge & ADA let him off with three years. Served ONE. Dallas

Moved to Grand Prairie. Seventeen guns went out the kitchen window in 1984. Burglar alarm didn't work. GP police never recovered any of them. Rumor was the former mayor's son did it. Who knows.

Moved to Desoto, Texas 1987. You guessed it THIRD house burglarized. This time no guns lost, didn't have any exposed but did lose $4500.00 in tools out of the garage. Nothing recovered.

Your lucky that the Sheriff did his job, so did Bill Decker, Dallas sheriff in 68. I have a fair collection again that is in a steel cabinet bolted to the wall & slab floor. In 68 I had a chance to shoot one of the thieves but didn't. He looked like a 12/14 year old from the back. Turned out he was 41, just small. I swore in 68 I'd never fail to take the shot again, even if the thief was in DIAPERS.

I got my three guns back this morning. I got my 270 win auto and 12 gauge back in pretty good shape. But my Rem 700 in 270win is in horrible shape. It looks like it was kept outside this whole time. I had already replaced it with a new one so now I have two exactly the same. So, I guess I got one to experiment on. I'm thinking full out custom varmint gun; better stock, fluted barrel with muzzle brake, bipod, and a nice high power scope... just to start. lol

Another argument for a good gun safe is the potentiat of fire. My farm house in Pennsylvania was totally destroyed by a fire started by an arsonist 2 weeks ago. The gun cabinet there had only a BB gun in it and was totally destroyed. I had 2 old guns hidden in the house at the time and both were fortunately rescued by a neighbor after the first fire was extinguished and before the house was totally destroyed when the arsonist returned early the next morning to relight it resulting in total destruction. The documents in a small safe survived intact, so I have confidence my fire rated gun will protect those I have in Colorado

au2183, I'm honestly not sure. I'm not going to tell them but if they ask I'll pay. They promised me that they would pay for everything. But I barely got enough to pay for the door that was kicked in. So, there on their own.
Irv S, I had a friend who's cabin burned down. He kept all his guns and valuables in a safe and that's all that made it out of the fire. Sucks to hear about your arsonist. Hope he gets caught, or burnt.

When I was robbed fortunately it was after a police friend had warned me about having any guns displayed or out in the open. He was right they got jewelry and cash that was in the usual places. Missed anything that was out of sight...
They caught the guy he was a carpet dude that had done some work and was a drug fiend. Never recoverd anything by the time the cops caught up with him. If any guns were around they would have been lost as well.

A good gun safe and a "bait" cabinet

I know someone who has two gun safes in a basement area that the average person could not find even if they knew it was there. In his living-room is a glass door wooden gun cabinet with some CRAP long guns in it. The real surprise is the switch under each butt stock that sets off the capsaicin bomb.
I like his style!

I know of a couple who put up a fake gun safe that was weighted and installed a Lo-Jack in it. They then made a safe that fits under their bed with their guns in it. About a year after they put up the fake safe it was stolen. They gave the Lo-Jack code to the police who tracked it down to a punk kid living down the street from them. The police showed up as the kid was trying to cut open the safe.
But a capsaicin bomb would be pretty fun too. Maybe add a little dye to stain the skin for a while.

Display cabinet is a great deterrent to have to confuse the crooks, we have some old BB guns, toy guns and old paintball stuff in ours. I like the booby trap idea too. Glad you got your guns backs or some of them!

I have three gun safes, all bolted to the basement floor and the foundation wall. These are fire box heavy gun safes. They require a key and a combination. These will not keep the pros out, but will slow them down. The high school thief type of kids will not be able to get into them.

I'm bad about gun security. I guess I'm still living in the past. when your gun cabinet, bar, and rolltop desk were the center pieces of your den. I still have a gun rack with my functional wall hangers, Baker damascus double, Wnchester model 94, Mauser vz24, & m93 flanked by a couple of .32 & .38 Iver Johson revolvers and a lighted glass gun case with a Bakial double coach, Marlin 30AS, H&R Huntsman, Savage 99F, Browning Light Twelve, Mossberg 500A. All are things of beauty with with fine wood and metal, and should be displayed with pride. They have historical value, as well as personal value, I know you can all relate. I'm fortunate to still live in a fairly "secure" rural community. Of course all the tactical weapons are locked up. It's a sad state we're in fellas.
