Talking bullet catcher

Not sure if this is the place to post this but here we go. I made a bullet catcher with a 12 in peice of sch 40 8 in steel pipe and some 5\16 ths plate. First I cut two wedges out then welded it together with a taper to get rid of some weight and make the last part easy. Then I cut the small side square and welded the plate on. Step 3 was to fill the cavity with wood hardwoods are best then I got a hatchet and a hammer and pounded shims in till it was tight and full. After that shoot it with a paper plate and a dot tacked on. I will "repair" it with more wedges after I get home them when it starts to get heavy or turn to mush take the wood out and cast bullets out of shot bullets recycling at its finest. It will eat hundreds of bullets my last teardown got me about 25 lbs. My second reason that came to me later is fire danger it is crazy around here. I have had a few failures at this and this works. Does anybody else do something like this and if so lets hear about it and trade ideas to improve

If you have to make wood chips again, might I suggest using a wood chipper. The 6 hp one I have for brush around the yard makes nice little chips.

Also to what end are you using this? If this is the only back stop, then I'd be concerned. If you are using to test fire, fir form, or lap barrels then I completely understand.

A cheaper easier way to do something like this may be a multi baffled (plywood) sand filled box.

i made a bullet catcher a few years back ,used plywood and made it 12''x12'' x 48 '' it worked but the power of the bullet was severely under estimated. even with an open top it opened up the box .............and i got wet .

i did manage to get some nicely mushroomed bullets ,normally found 3' in
