45/70 in Africa

I saw Phil Spangler of G&A took a Buff with 45/70 with Garret Loads.  I am thinking of taking on mbogo and while the thought of a new .416 or 375 is pleasant, I kind of want to get one with a rifle I already have, my No. 1 45/70.  How fun to look at the mopane scratches in the stock day dreaminig about africa while huntinig elk or even sittinig in a Kansas deer stand.  If I got an "african" big bore it would never come out of the safe back home.   I'm sure that the 500 grain Hornady solid at 1800 fps is plently, any legal issues?  Zimbabwe or Mozambique most likley.  I know  a single shot....Thats what the PH with an Evans 470 double is for.

Matt, why don't you get in contact with Randy Garrett / Garrett Cartridges or Tim Sundes / Buffalo Bore and see what they have to say.  I believe that both companies offer .45-70 ammo that has been to Africa and they could tell you what has been reported to work best.

Actually is a good idea to stick with what you already have instead of running out and buying somethign special just to whack something in Africa that looks and smells like a cow (and an undersized cow at that)...nevertheless I do not think that if you bought a .375 that it would "never leave" home once back here. I have had two #1's in .375 H&H, and will soon obtain a Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in the same caliber (for no apparent reason I love .375's). Mine will never be used on a buffalo...or anything really big...but a 300 gr sierra on top of 81.0 grs of 4350 seems to drop coyotes faster than anything I ever saw! Also drops wild hogs in their tracks...And to answer your question about it's usage in Africa, there are a number of African professional hunters who are now using cut down Marlin 1895's. check this link: www.galleryofguns.com/ShootingTimes/Articles/DisplayArticles.asp?ID=24
