Rifle barrel threads

A local gunshop has a number of used gunbarrels on special, in an assorted number of calibers.

I have an old sporterized war Mauser 98 with a poorly performing 8X57 barrel.

One barrel, in .30-06 caliber, was marked "FIREARMS INTERNATIONAL CORP. WASH D.C. CAL 30-06., appearing in very good condition. the unblued portions on the breach face looks like it came from an FN Mauser action, ie. the reciever internal plate seems to have been machined on both sides.

The threads are square topped and square bottomed, 6 per 1/2 inch.

The thing was too low priced to pass up. so I bought it only hoping it would screww into a Mauser 98 action.

Is there a web site with barrel thread descriptions?

Is there a step by step description web site with insructions barrel replacement?

Also, the store had a great many nice looking barrels for various Reminton and Wichester rilfes. How hard would it be to thread one of these for an Arisaka 99 rifle?

I need a site for ther purchase of headspace gages as well.

Yup, send Brownells tech section a question listing a decsription of the action, pitch and type of threads on the barrel you have and they can answer most all of your questions.

This doesn't sound like it will screw into a 98 mauser action. The threads form on a 98 is a standard form. (^^^^^) The only rifles I can think of which have a square thread form are lever actions and some falling block actions.

Take it to the guys at Brownells as faucettb recomends and see what they have to say.

It may be that it can be reshouldered, rethreaded, and rechambered to fit the mauser. Lathe and expieriance required.

Thanks, for the sound advice. I don't have a reliable gunsmith I trust at this time. I know there are a few around. One young guy in the gunsmith shop (I don't think he was the gunsmith proper) told me I had a standard mauser thread on this barrel, but I didn't find him reliable. Noone ever says "I don't know" on account it damages their pride, I guess.

I found a website that had enlarged blueprint style drawings of the various thread patterns of a number of popular rifle actions, I looked at that site a couple of years ago but somehow I lost the address, and now I can't find it.

Thats what I would like to have here, but all suggestions are appreciated.

Bolt Action Rifles by Frank de Hass has drawings and dimensions of many bolt action rifle barrel threads. Those with square threads are:
U.S. Krag Jorgensen - 10 tpi, O.D. .940" (over threads)
Norwegian Krag - 12 tpi, O.D. 1.050", left hand
U.S. Springfield 1903, all types, 10 tpi, O.D. 1.040"
P14, P17 Enfields, Remington 30, 30S, 720 - 10 tpi, O.D 1.085"
Mathieu, 10 tpi, O.D. .660"?

You have a barrel that was taken from a P-17 Enfield.

I recently had a gunsmith in Gilbert, Az remove an identical barrel with those markings from a P-17 action and rebarrel with his custom barrel.

halhway down the descriptions is an entry, "Mauser w/square threads" so if they make prefit barrels for it, it must exist?
