300 H&H to 300 Win Mag?

Hey guys and gals,
Looking at a Winchester XTR Sporter in 300 H&H Magnum. Thinking about picking it up, but am wondering if I could or should rechamber it to 300 Winchester Mag?

The main reason, is that I already load for 300 Winchester, which I love for what it is. Should I leave it alone, or what yould you guys do? Have no specific purpose in mind, except to gain another thumper. Price is average, and am mostly trying to help someone out, who needs out of it.
Regards

Can't do that Bestboss. The 300 Win mag is much shorter than the 30 H&H. It was designed to function in 30-06 length actions.

With todays modern powders the 300 H&H is an excellent round and gives up nothing to very little to the 300 Win mag.

If you just have to have more power then think about having it rechambered to a 300 Weatherby. Same case just blowed out a bit.

Bob - back in the early 70's I had a M70 Super Grade in 300 H&H which developed excessive headspace. Traded it in on a new Ruger M77 in 7RM (still have it). The gunsmiths I traded with rechambered the rifle into .300 WM and was quite a shooter for what I heard. There was enough barrel shank to cut 1" off, rethread and rechamber.

Right you are kdub, Wasn't thinking about cutting back the barrel and rethreading, just running a new Reamer into the existing chamber.

Had a friend I grew up with had a beautiful pre-64 Winchester 70 in 300 H&H. His dad had it rechamberd for the 300 ICL Grizzly. One of the 300 Weatherby clones with a sharper shoulder and straight walls.

Boy I can't even begin to think how many deer, elk, moose and bear have fallen to that gun. I started hunting with him in 1961 and he's still killing big game with that same gun. While we were in Alaska I had that gun armaloyed including the inside of the bore and chamber. He and I killed two dahl sheep up Thunderbird creek out of Anchorage off Lake Eklutna.

650 yard shots and we could not get an inch closer. I had a Ruger mod 77 06. Had built a 264 Win mag just for sheep and ended up getting offered more money than I could pass up two weeks before the hunt for it. 06 was the only other gun on the rack at the moment. Sure was wishing for more gun when it came time to shoot.

I do think that the old 300 H&H does not have near the gap with some of our modern powders now than it did back in the 60's.

You will not be able to just run a 300 Winchester Magnum reamer into a 300 H&H Magnum chamber. The 300 H&H case is about .23" longer than the 300 Win Mag. The best you could hope for as mentioned above is a 300 Weatherby Magnum and even that would be .025" short. You could set that barrel back a few threads to make up the difference. You would need a headspace gauge and even at that you might be setting the barrel back a thread to get the proper headspace. 300 Remington Ultra Mag?

Thanks guys, I hadn't thought about a longer case, as I only looked at the base comparison for bolt modification. I guess I was in a hurry. I am still thinking of picking it up and shooting it as a 300 H&H, as it is a pretty minty gun.

My 300 Win Mag, on the other hand, is a Browning Safari and I am not sure that I will ever find another shooter like that!
