Tapping for Williams Peep Sight

Marlin 1895 GS, tapping for Williams 5D peep sight like Marshall did in .444 article, so not using factory scope mount holes, as they will be used for the scope mounts. I cannot find a tap in my area for the 6-48 screws that come with the sight, so I was wondering if using a 6-32 tap and getting replacement screws would create any problems? Hate to spend the money at Midway or Brownell's, as it is mostly shipping by the time all is said and done and will only be used once

Thanks in advance, and God bless, Ryan

No Ryan don't do it. The 6 by 48 gives you much greater holding power. You also need the correct drill and two taps, a standard tap and a bottoming tap to do the job right. Check the outfits that sell bolts and chain, they often also sell taps and dies.

Thanks, faucettb, that's what I needed to know. I'll continue to look, but most places only offer more "standard" offerings. I was looking at Marshall's instructions on Beartooth website and he only mentioned the tapered tap, which I am familiar with, but is that bottoming tap a square, non-tapered tap to bottom the hole? My Win94 is tapped all the way through, as are the factory holes on top of my Marlin. Why is the bottoming tap needed?

Thanks again and God Bless, Ryan

You don't need a bottoming tap for that job, as the holes aren't blind. Most medium sized cities have at least one place that sells lathes and milling machines. They should have or can get speciality tools for less than Brownells' "shipping included" price.

you might have some luck at your local machine shop, if they won't do it for you reasonoably, they may loan you the tap (less likely) or tell you where you could purchase one

Jacks right, I keep forgetting about thru holes on the lever guns. Most of my experience is with bolt guns. Sorry.

You will more than likely have to go through Brownells to get the taps. They are not a standard size. Theses are mainly used for guns and thats why you can't find them in other stores that sell regular taps.
