6.5 mm rough bore?

My 6.5 Swede shoots very well. Usually one and one half inches or so for the first few shots. When I clean it is has a lot of copper in the bore. The only way I can get it out is with a slightly undersized brush with very fine steel wool and J&B. It takes some scrubbing and I am wondering how to smooth this bore without messing up its accuracy. Should I hand lap it? Should I fire lap it?
Should I stick to lead bullets for a while? A LONG while?
I am really tired of shooting it three to five times and cleaning it for an hour. Help me guys, its wearing me out. Thanks for the help.

Maybe you need a more agressive cleaning solution like Barnes C-10.One of my Swedes has a rough bores. The Model 38 has a beautifull shiny bore.I polished my old Model 94 years ago.I think If I remember correctly I used very fine steel wool and some fine polishing compound. That helped alot and did not harm accuracy. If the bore is very rough I don't think shooting lead is a solution.Moly coated bullets may help.I recently read of a process that leaves a hard coating inside the bore. They claim that it smooths out the bore and gives better accuracy and less fouling. It's a doityourself deal.I can't find the info right now.I'll look for it and try to post it if no one else posts it.

Might want to give one of the foaming type copper removal solvents a try. I've used Wipe Out and GunSlick with good results. Lots easier than brush scrubbing!

If you are thinking of fire lapping, the board's host, www.Beartoothbullets.com has a lapping kit and great instructions. In fact, go to the home page and scroll down to the fire lapping link.

It will smooth up eventually, if you always clean all of the copper out of the barrel. Second Ken's suggestion of foaming bore cleaner, specifically Wipe-Out Bore Foam.

But I'd just lap it.

An hour to clean a 6.5 bore sounds like a dream to me. I'd leave it alone and feel blessed.

I have not tried the "foaming" bore cleaners yet. Let all of us know how much time it "shaves' off of your cleaning time.

"Plug the breech" and fill-er-up with whatever solvent that you like. Let that stand overnight. Drain, and patch it out. Repeat as needed (if needed).
