Win Mod 70 (pre 64) Safety Issue

Hi -

Just bought my second pre 64 Model 70 in caliber 270. There is a problem with the safety. When moving it from the fire position to the full safe position it hangs. It will rotate past the halfway point (safe but not bolt locked) then hangs as it moves toward the bolt lock position. I can move it past the "hang" point, but with difficulty.

This rifle was made in 1950 and generally looks pretty good. It is marked as a standard model 70 with serial number 150xxx, marked 270 W C F, high gloss stock with cheek rest and squared off forearm (probably after market stock).

Any help on the safety issue would be appreciatd.

Regards.

If that bolt has never been stripped and cleaned , it could be 62 years of crud has caught up with it . If you aren't familiar with the m70 bolt , I would suggest taking it to a smith that is !

Put the safety in the middle position, then remove the bolt. You should be able to rotate the striker (there will be a spring loaded catch) till it comes completely out of the shroud.

Look carefully at the angled surface on the striker where the safety pushes against it. If the safety has dug a 'divot' in the surface then it causes problems. Guess how I know this can happen...

Hopefully it's not too bad and you can carefully smooth out the angled surface. But, you have to ensure the safety is still picking up the striker off the sear when it's engaged. Just look at the back of the striker as you put the safety on, it should move a little.

If it doesn't take it off the sear, you can get into a condition where the rifle can fire when it's take off safe. Not good...... be careful.
