Hello fellow shooters, had a question about a 6.5x55 reamer. Without reamer in hand, not sure who made it, but im sure it came from Midway USA..Without having to order a custom reamer, can i have my machinist shorten the cuting flutes on my reamer, so it does not have such a deep throat? Thought he might use a surface grinder W/very fine disc..and perhaps a jig of some kind..I have to single shot my long range cases ..(Those 130gr berger VLD's dont give me harldy any bullet inside the case to be seated close to the lands, as they shoot the best for me..

The reamer can usually be altered. Consider having the reamer altered to cut the chamber only, then purchase a separate Throating Reamer.

Not knowing your machinists capabilities with chamber reamers, the manufacturer may be the way to go.

A surface grinder is not what you want to use. To get the correct grind you need to have a Tool/Cutter grinder with someone who knows how to grind the reamer. You could get a quick and dirty fix using a tool post grinder in a lathe.

You know if you shorten the free bore then you won't be able to shoot the longer bullets with out deep seating the bullet. Nothing wrong with throating your gun for a particular bullet though. You need to know your OAL with the bullet you want to use. Give that information to the gunsmith. Or, have Clymer Tools grind it for you.
