Hey guys, what sort of velocities could I expect out of a 12" encore 44mag barrel compared to a 8 inch revolver? Also with the 12" barrel is it realistic to shoot at elk out to 200 yards assuming one has practiced and is capable of making the shot? Thanks!

I'm guessing you'd pick up 100-150fps. Rifle barrels generally pick up 400 or so fps, depending on barrel length. It depends on the b/c gap on the revolver you are comparing with.

200 yards seems an awfully long way for handgunning elk. I'm sure it's been done. Gotta figure you are going to lose 500-600fps off of the muzzle velocity at that range.

I have 2 15" encore pistol barrels in 454casull & 30-06 within a 100 yards I'd take a shot with the 06.Just for comparison a friend of mine bought a 45 Colt Rug BH with a 4 5/8" barrel & added Hogue Rubber Grips .He chose some ammo from www.buffalobore.com Heavy 45 Colt +P 300gr Speer JFN 1325fps/ME 1170ft lbs & used it to drop a wounded running cow elk at 65 yards with a head shot but my friend is a life long hunter ,a vietnam combat verteran,is an excellent shooter well trained by the US Army and a few LE agencies. The 45 Colt out performs the 44mag using the same weight bullet from the same source .
