480 ruger hunting loads

I am fairly new to reloading and am just getting setup for reloading for the 480. I am looking for loads for whitetails and black bear using cast bullets. Brands and weights of your favorite bullets would be appreciated. Also any pet load data for the bullets in ? that you are willing to part with. I will be using these in a RSRH 7.5 barrel. Currently shooting Hornady and Speer factory ammo. Also any opinions on dies. I have an RCBS RC and use RCBS dies for my rifles. I was looking at the Lee Carbide dies or the Hornady's for my 480 though.

Thanks,
Scott

PS I am looking for something that will be accurate out to 100yds.

Scott,

We offer several bullets suitable for the .480 Ruger, depending upon your weight preferences.

I also suggest that you use a .476" diameter sizing option for your RSRH revolver for best performance and accuracy.

The weights offered are listed below:
  • 325g WFNGC
  • 355g LFNGC
  • 385g LFNPB
  • 420g LFNPB
  • 420g LFNGC
  • 420g WFNGC
The 325g WFNGC replicates the factory weight bullet, but due to the design of the WFN profile and the gas check in conjunction with the reduced friction coefficient when compared to comparable weight jacketed bullets, this projectile will deliver up to 200 fps greater velocity when loaded to the same chamber pressures as its jacketed counterparts. The huge meplat on the nose of this bullet makes it a tremendous game stopper, and cuts huge permanant wound channels!

The 355g LFNGC bullet we offer was designed and cataloged by us at the same time the first .480 Ruger revolvers were available to the public. This bullet allows acheiving the same muzzle velocity as the factory loaded 325g bullet at equal chamber pressures, due again to the configuration of the bullet's design, the lower friction coefficient of the gas-checked alloy bullet when compared to jacketed bullets and of course our proprietary lube. The net result is a very pleasant to shoot cartridge with increased bullet weight for better penetration and down-range energy as well as enhanced trajectory.

Hopefully this information will assist you in your bullet selection process.

Regarding loading dies, either of the manufacturer's dies you mention will give you a lifetime of reliable service. Pick one and don't look back, you can't make a bad choice with either.

God Bless,

Scott,
One of my good friends just purchased a SRH in .480, with a 7 1/2" barrel. I worked up some loads for him using jacketed bullets, because my friend did not want to use cast. His gun, his choice. However we did use the Hornady 325 gr XTP, and the Speer 325 gr GDSP, available through Graf's in bulk. The Speer was the most accurate bullet. We settled on a load of 24 gr IMR4227, sparked with CCI 350's in Starline brass. This load gives 1160 f/s at the muzzle and he's shooting 4" groups at 100 yards from a rest. He has mounted a Burris 2x EER scope on his SRH, which helps a great deal in precise shot placement at longer ranges. Recoil in this load is quite manageable. As a matter of fact, my 300 gr LFP loads in my Bowen Bisley Blackhawk are much sharper in recoil, and I'm only getting 1180 f/s out of them. Hope this helps.

Scott,

Here's a really good proven load for the .480 using our 325gWFNGC
