221 Fireball

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

Hi!
Iīm new here but i hope you can help me with some reloadingproblems..
I have just built a 221 Remington from a Sako Vixen L46, i intend to use it for Rock Ptarmigan and my idea is tu use quite heavy bullets 50-55GR to manage the wind up in the mountains.
221 is a rare caliber in Sweden so itīs hard to find reloadingdata here.
My idea is to keep the speed around 2600fps +-100fps so i donīt destroy the birds.

Is there anyone who can help me with some data to start with? I have a Pro Crono so i can adjust the loadings to my porpuose when i get started.

I have:

Powder:
Hogdon LilīGun
VihtaVuori N110
Norma 200

Bullets:
Sako 50GR FMJ
Norma 50GR FMJ
Winchester 55GR FMJB
Lapua 55GR FMJ

This data in the post above is off the Hodgdon website for the Fireball

Popular powders over here are IMR 4198, IMR 4227, and my personal favorite Reloader #7.

My pet load - 19 grains of reloader #7 (Lee 1.3cc dipper cup) with Rem 7 1/2 primers under a Nosler or Sierra 40 grain plastic tip bullet is a super combination in my Rem 700 221 Fireball.

Be careful with Lil'Gun, there's not much margin of error in load range.

This may be interest to you too.

Oh yeah - nice to see another Fireball fan. It's a great cartridge and easy to load for.

Thank you for replying!
Itīs like i thought, we donīt use the same type of powder..
Iīll try LilīGun to start with, hope to get some more datas too, maybe someone have tried "my" type of powder?
I intended make a trip to the shotingrange to day but we have -18 C, hard wind and snow, i think iīll pass..

221 is as i wrote not so common in sweden, climbing the mountins, hunting for Rock Ptarmigan is one of my absolute favorite type of hunting. The problem is the wind..
Lot of people use 22Lr, 22WM or 22Hornet for the birds, iīve tried them all but no one of them can manage the wind very well and gives quite short shooting distance.
221 is the most powerfoull gun you are allowed to use up there, i donīt know anyone who have tryed it for the Ptarmigans so iīll give it a try

I bought 400 remington cases earlier, but now itīs allmost impossible to find more in Sweden, tried to order from the US but your customs said NO.
Iīll try to make my own brass from 222:s when iīm out of Remington brass.

N110 is right next to Lil'Gun on the burn rate chart so you might try minimum Lil'Gun load data for it. N200 Is a little faster than H4198 so that data may give you a good starting point too.

400 cases should last you a long time, especially if you anneal them after a few loadings. I've not yet had to anneal my original factory cases and I have loaded some of them 9 or 10 times.

Iīve allready started reloading..
Iīll start with Winchester 55GR fmj for the break in of the gun and to check the velocity with the chrono

To morrow iīll go to the range, snowstorm or not

If i can reload them 9-10 times they will last for a while
The Remington cases i had for my 22 Hornet cracked in the throat after 2-3 loadings.
