I would like to make up some Hivel plinking loads.
I plan to use all copper, zinc (or zinc alloy,) or fmj lead bullets in .309 dia .
I would like to get velocities approaching ( or in excess of )  4k and have them function in an FAL, M1A, or VEPR
OAL, chamber pressure, and the gas systems of these rifles are things I would like to take into consideration .
I realize this may be impractical, but would like to hear your thoughts.

Im thinking loading data for the .308 accellerator (saboted .223) rounds will work.
has anyone ran these through an autoloader ?

Sorry, Joe - I'm not ignoring you but I've never tried really lightweight bullets in .308. I've shot 110gr Hornady bullets with IMR4064, I got the load out of the Hornady manual. No chronograph at the time, but they were quite accurate. I also tried the Accelerators, they grouped about 1.5" which was about twice what the 110gr loads did. But I've not seen data for accelerator-type loads. Do you know of a source of data and components? It seems I've seen an ad for the sabots in a magazine...    ID

ID, If your interested in sabots, I pulled this off a site awhile back :

Sabots for .224 in .308
howell  posted 05-03-2000 07:15 PM ET (US)

I have sabots to fire .224 bullets in .308 bores. I have no been able to come close to Remington Acclerator accuracy with these things. I'm using a Remington 788, 30/30 which is a sub MOA gun with factory Core Locs and Acclerators so I know that the gun will do the job.
any help?

Thanks Harry

Hello Harry,
I had the same problem when I started to load .22 caliber bullets in a .308" sabot for my 30-06 and 300 Savage. The initial groups were horrible at first. Almost to the point of scraping the whole sabot idea.

One of my good friends had custom made a "seating stem" that fit onto the top of the press ram. I put a .223 die into the press and set it to just seat the bullet fully in the sabot first. After running off 100 rounds I loaded some 30-06 and 300 Savage, with the same data I used before and the groupings were much better(from a 7" group to a 1-1/2" group @ 100 yards). This way the bullets were seated more consistently in the sabot. Still not the same as what I originally got from the Remington Accelerators, but worth the time to add that extra step into the reloading process. If you can find a way to make something or have it made, you will be very surprised at your results the next time you reload the sabots.

Best of luck and let us know what happens.

Greg

Greg,
Thanks, I'll try that. I did improve the accuracy by seating the bullet more fully by hand into the sabot. I am also going to use a 30 cal straight line seater and then take the shells to a machine shop buddy and measure run-out on the bullet tips

When you say that you seated the bullet by hand do you mean that you manually pushed the bullet into the sabot as far as it would go or do you mean that you used some kind of special seating apparatus seperate from your press? What kind of increase in accuracy did you experience from this method?

I am trying to develope a load for using .224 bullets with .30 cal sabots
that will dependably operate in Ruger mini .30s,SKSs,czech 7.62x39 bolt guns and AK type rifles but I have yet to load a saboted round for anything but .308 yet and I have had no luck in the accuracy department.

There is a good article in the 8th edition of Cartridges of the World on what Remington went through to develop the Accelerators. They apparently use a powder that they don't sell to the public and also use a primer with a slightly smaller pellet of the priming compound in it. The article may be useful to you guys. I might be interested in fixing up some for 7.62x39. Where are you finding the sabots?

Am interested in this topic as am unable to find Rem. Accelerators in .30-06 Springfield; can you offer any help as to where to get the components for a reloaded version? Specifically, I'm interested in building a cartridge with a 55gr expanding bullet (e.g. powerpoint) - is there a reloader you'd recommend for this sort of thing?
Thanks!

To answer Grail's question:
I used a 223 seating stem (using my press) to seat the bullet into the sabot first, then continued to load the 30-06 with the sabots normally. This way the 223 bullets were firmly and consistently seated into the sabots before pressing and crimping them into the 30-06 neck.

The sabots were purchased several years ago, I'm not sure if they are still in business or not. Here is the URL to a photo of the data sheet they sent with the sabots.

The supplier is:

JNS Supply Company, P.O. Box 711, 774 North 300 West, Spanish Fork, UT 84660, (801) 798-1689

I have been using Sabots from J&D corp for two years. I have had the best group with 53.8 grs of 748 winchester powder with a lite crimp. I have shoot 1" groups at 100 yd and 2.5" groups at 200 yds.

I need some advice guys....
What is the best barrel twist for 62gr-70gr
saboted rounds and do any of you have any experience using .308 sabots in .310 bores(SKS,AK,Brit.303)?I would also like to know your opinions on using saboted rounds in auto loading rifles, reliable function?
Thanks.
GRAIL

These guys have sabots and data.
They also have a custom seating die, like the one mentioned above:
http://www.reloadammo.com/sabot.htm

They usually run 1k @ $40

I have worked out the pains involved with casting zinc. I like the light weight but same AOL.
How much would the hardness effect chamber pressure ? and how do I compensate for this ?
Can I extrapolate data using Bronze or other monolithic solids ?

Thanks
