I have a can of Winchester Ball Powder, Magnum Rifle, and also a can of Winchester Ball Powder, 785. These appear to be obsolete, my powder appears good. But I have no loading data for them, can't find anywhere. I load for 30-06, 308, 220 Swift, and 243 Winchester. Does anybody have any loading data I could use for this powder and cartridges.

The only thing I can tell you is that those are pretty slow powders, with WMR being close to 4831 and 785 in the same range as RL22.

I can offer you some of Winchester's own load data circa 1980 for their 785 powder:


For .243win with W-785

There are notes to not reduce these loads but use them exactly as shown. They also specify a "Winchester-Western" Large Rifle primer be used, no mention of Winchester Large Rifle "magnum" primer is listed i.e., *use at your own risk* I assume they developed these loads in Winchester brass but they did not mention it.

No load data listed for either .308win or .220 swift.

Keep in mind that one major reason both powders were discontinued was erratic pressures in the .243 Win. Use your best judgment.

Hornady's fifth addition has data for WMR. I found several pounds of it, and use if for both 7RM and 264WM. Does pretty well, actually, although I have noticed some temp senistivity and not really many of the loads shine accuracy wise- not bad, relative of the results I'm getting with everything else, I suppose. I make it a practice to use Fed 215Ms on both of these rounds, and I think that is hepful with WMR.

It is certainly good advice to exercise care. But it was a good and cheap practice powder that I've been able to stay tuned up with.

That's the rumor.

Winchester folks won't address it directly. But this is a VERY small industry, and everybody knows everybody. So when a lab tech from Acme Bullets calls a buddy lab tech at Smith&Jones Powder company to chat about loads they are testing, the S&J guy might let out a few cautionary comments about one of their powders in a certain cartridge. Some time later, the Acme tech might find himself chatting with a writer, and ...
