Welcome to Shooters Forum, Dpease4.

I would recommend some of the loads in the Sierra manual. If you've got a particular powder in mind, you could go to that website and see if they have any loads. The trouble with asking for load data on the Internet is you just don't know what you're going to wind up with.

I used the 140gr Gameking from my 270 Winchester for 5 or 6 years on big Wisconsin whitetail. I wound up changing to 140gr Accubond bullets because the GK's kept coming apart on big deer. I wouldn't expect them to fair any better on elk; I'd definitely want a sturdier bullet, even for cows.

Yup - take any offered handload on the internet with a grain of salt - what's safe in one firearm may be a bomb in another. Stick with the listed loadings in the published manuals. You do have one, don't you?

Welcome to the shooters forum.

I'll echo a couple thoughts here. Don't trust the internet loads that anyone offers without checking them for yourself against published data by either a bullet or powder manufacture.

I'll second Broom's thoughts on bullets. I have used Sierra bullets on deer for many years. They are accurate but some tend to fly appart when smacking something soild, especially at close ranges and at high velocity's like your WSM can run at. Elk are usually what I consider something solid. I'd look at Noslers accubond or partion if they shoot good in your rifle.

I've only had one game experience with accubonds on game...it was a bad one. Still I loaded some up for my 35 whelen and plan to use it on elk. For my 270 WSM, I use stronger bullets...Barnes TTSX. So far it's been fantastic on deer. I don't normally carry that caliber when after elk though.
