CFE 223 in my 22-250

I had originally bought the CFE 223 for my 308, but haven't gotten to loading for it yet. I had just finished the thumbhole stock (in pepper) and bedding for my Sav Mod 12 hvy barrel 22-250 and wanted to try out the gun and the powder. I had also bought some HSM loads in 55 gr to try out since the HSM's have given good to great accuracy in my 223.

I cannot comment on how clean CFE 223 is because I shot other stuff through my barrel, but I can say the velocities it gives are as advertised in the Hodgon reloading web page. This stuff is fast, and at this point at least as accurate as the HSM factory ammo.

Oh and it meters fantastic through my Pa's Lyman auto scale.

Of couse I don't need the velocity really w/the 22-250, so I will work on a diff't powder in the 22-250. Just loaded up some Barnes 36 grain grenades w/BLC(2).

I suppose all things are relative.
General Dynamics' SMP 842, ooppss...I mean Hodgdon's CFE223 is supposed to be good at cleaning copper.
Since you referenced the 308/223, if you get a chance I would be interested in some info on those cartridges.
I have been madly in love with Win 748 for those two for a very long time. It too is a copper cleaner, but the trick(for me) is the barrel temps. Specifically compared to Varget, Win 748 allows much more volume of fire before the barrel gets to warm for me.

Be interesting to hear what you think.

Been looking at this powder for my .22-250 and wondering about H414. My benchrest friend says 40 Gr. H414 with a magnum primer. Would you need a magnum primer for CFE 223? Lou

Unfortunately I haven't done any loading yet, or shooting of the 308 w/the CFE 223. I'm going to work on that this week I hope, as I may be off to my father's this weekend.

I've not to date had good luck w/748 in my two 308's. Varget has been my go to so far w/various bullets for accuracy that is.

LR,
H414 is Win 760. Unless he has a ES/SD reason, there is no need for a mag primer.

Speaking of CFE223, I just did my first batch of tests with that powder in my .223 Savage bolt gun. I started low and went up in half grain increments to near maximum charges per Hodgdon's data and sticking as close as possible to the listed specs for OAL. With 69 grain Sierra HPBT's I shot half inch groups with 24 and 24.5 grains. The groups opened up for higher charges. But for 55 and 60 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, I got the best groups with 27.5 and 26.5 grains respectively, both near the maximum shown for those weights of bullets. Groups were .7" for the 55 and .55" for the 60. I will probably creep up a little farther on the 55 and 60 grain bullets my next time out. No overly flattened primers, which I often get with my .223 when I start approaching too high of pressure. I will also take the chronograph my next trip to the range to verify velocity and consistency. Shot a total of 55 rounds and didn't see any real difference in copper fouling. Still got a nice blue patch the first time through the bore. Will see what comes out after an overnight soak.
