IMR4064 vs AA4064

Registered Users do not see the above ad.

I was given a couple of unopened jugs of IMR 4064 and having never used this powder I was wondering how it compares to the AA 4064 I use for my 45/90 500 grain loads? I would never just assume they are the same but are they similar enough to use the same data if I start at the minimum charge recommended for the Accurate 4064, or are they completely different? I have searched for data for the IMR version and I can find some 45/70 loads on the Hodgdon site but nothing similar for the Accurate 4064 that I could cross-reference.

Just kinda curious what loads of the AA are you currently using? I noticed in the Hornady book there were some listed for IMR 4064 but it's about the slowest powder they recommend.

I am using 48 grains under the Lee 459-500-3R as suggested by Accurate when I E-mailed them for load info, I couldn't find much info at all for loading the 45/90 and there was zero to be found for the Lee bullet which seats deeper than most 500 grain 458s. They suggested four different powders but at a starting load of 45 grains and a max of 50 the 4064 gave the best case fill for an under 28,000 PSI load, 48 grains seems to give the best accuracy in my 32" barrel. I just got these two jugs of IMR for free and thought if the IMR is similar enough I might use it in the 45/90.

Were these for 45/90 loads? If so were they for 500 grain bullets?

I'm sorry Red, I misread your post. They were for 350 & 500 grain jacketed bullets in the 45-70.

Under the 45-100 Sharps listing in the Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges, they have a listing for IMR4064 using a 496 grain Sharps custom PP bullet:

36.0 gr @ 1,245 fps

37.0 gr @ 1,268 fps

38.0 gr @ 1,307 fps

39.0 gr @ 1,326 fps

40.0 gr @ 1.354 fps

Don't know if this will help or not. Couldn't find any listing for the 45 -90, other than a 430 gr RCBS bullet with 37.5 g r of RL 7 and a dacron filler @1,456 fps.

Kdub, that info is indeed helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to post it for me,

Monty, the fact that IMR 4064 is listed for the 500 grain 45/70 load is also interesting,

Thanks guys
