I would like to load medium pressure loads for my Remington 7400 to decrease wear and tear. and to increase the guns life.

What would be a good load?
All i have is Varget powder at the moment.

And should I go below the Starting load or would that be dumb?

H4895 is a good powder for gas operated rifles.

H4895 is safe for reduced loads (see the youth loads at Hodgdon's web site), but I would start at the min and if it functions, you're good to go. I don't know if the youth loads will produce enough gas to operate the rifle.

I agree, H4895 is the way to go for reduced loads but... Go to Hodgdons web site and you will see that the starting loads for Varget will be gentle on your rifle to.

I'm using H4895 for both full-power and reduced loads, in 243, 308 and 30-'06. It's one rifle powder I will never be without.

You might try using WW-748 in your Remington 7400 as it's a "cooler" burning powder and will function better.

Here's a tip I use for milder loads in my own .308: Open your load manual to the pages for the good old .300 Savage and use those loads. Lower pressures mean lower recoil, lower blast, and lower working loads on your semi-auto. Nobody ever said a shot from a .300 Savage bounced off their deer.
