The best luck I have had in hunting the Wapiti in Montana (I was born in raised in the little town of Livingston 60-miles north of Yellowstone Park) has been in two locations.

1. Ibex Mountain (The Ibex) and its environs which is right in the Crazy Mountains area. Lots of private property ownership here so make sure you are not hunting posted land.

2. Yankee Jim Canyon outside of Gardner.

Cautionary note: Both are very rugged and unless you are in top physical condition you better rent a four wheeler. *

* Rugged Area, Elk hunting... so what's new? heh, heh. :D

If a monster muley is in your thoughts, try getting a tag for the Kiabab in the Grand Canyon area in Arizona. A special draw and cost for a very limited hunt, but those things are huge.

Drawing a tag is 99% of the of the challenge
